Default where to start looking for 6.0/t56?

for my winter project this year i am going to put a 6.0 LQ9/6-speed into my first gen camaro.

where should i start looking for a good lower miles motor? it doesnt have to be new because i am going to wait a little while, so i make sure i have everything in the car and running until i even start to build it up......so building up the 6.0 will probably be next winters project.

so where is a good place to look? do any of the sponsors sell used motors? im looking to do this as cheap as possible. is ebay reliable for this type of stuff?

there is really no point in buying a rebuilt/remanufactured ls1 if later on down the road im going to bore and stroke it and having to buy a whole new rotating assembly, heads, and cam for it, is there?

also, as a side note......i am going to try to offset the price of this by selling my current engine/trans. i have no idea how to go about doing this or what i could get for it. It is a ZZ3 350/350hp crate engine with a 4-speed manual. both have about 4,000 miles on them.

any info on anything i mentioned would be awsome.

thanks guys

Ebay is a good source,Hawk's thirdgen parts has a pretty good selection of salvage 4thgens ( www.hawksthirdgenparts.com ) . On the Ebay , I'd recommend sticking with a company with good feedback as opposed to an individual.

i changed it to a 6.0 LQ4 or LQ9 instead of the LS1 (just the iron version of the LS1).

info on locating an LS1 is still wanted, because i will probably change my mind 6 or 7 more times before i actually buy something, but im also looking for anything on the 6.0 now too.

thanks for the help so far, with hawks third gen parts. if there are any more sites like this that would be great because thats what im looking for.

keep it coming

Check the national parts locator at www.car-part.com and focus on 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 as the engine source, with 6.0L engine selected. You might even find one near you.

man, i dont know if its just me, but that site is kind of confusing. i did what you said and i looked at the silverado 2500 and selected engine. what are all those abreviations and stuff?

looking for something cheap too....i dont want to pay anything over 4,000 for the 6.0 and t56....but i just have to wait for something to come around for cheap. thanks for the site.

I'd definitely browse LS1tech's classifieds a few times a day if you're looking for an LS1. I've seen a a bunch of nice engines go through here. The early bird gets the worm. This site is probably one of the best places to find LS1s (or 6L) and usually the prices are cheaper than ebay. LS1 stuff on ebay is usually pretty expensive.

Also, you may find an LS1 or other first gen parts in the classifieds (forum) at www.pro-touring.com.

If you know anyone that works at a dealership start there. They can find some killer stuff for cheap if you have a hook up. I had a choice of a LS1/t-56 with 136miles on it or one with 8k miles on it. I hope I made a wise choice.

They can find them but if you just walk in off the street you better take some ky and bend over because they will make you pay.

I got hooked up because of a friend of the parts manager so I got my engine trany and everything for around $4k. Thats not the cheapest place I found but I feel better because it has been inspected. Plus he will be putting the cam and other parts in for me.

how did you find all of those?

im not going to start looking for the motor yet....i just wanted to get some ideas on how to even go about doing it.

i have not decided yet if i am going to keep my 68 camaro, sell my current motor/trans, and then put the 6.0 in it
or
sell my 68 camaro to buy a decent datsun z car and put the 6.0 into that....with a widebody kit of course.
i am very torn between these 2 options. i mean, look what these z cars look like with the widebody kit

but thats not the issue, just rambling.

thanks a lot for that guys ebay name....looks like i will be able to look for that guy when im ready to go forward with this (when i decide on what car to build)

so thanks again guys

and if you really want to you can give me your input on my 1st gen camaro Vs. datsun z car problem

below are the datsuns with the widebody kit on them. check out those fender flares!

The z will be faster, but the camaro is more patriotic. I know someone who has an older ( not sure of the year) z for sale.It looks like the ones in your pictures without the wide body kit. It's tubbed with a 9 inch rear and ladder bars( I think, could be 4-link). Let me know if you're interested and I'll get more concrete info for you.

yes ia m intersted. not sure if i will need to use those tubbs tho. the widebody flares fit up to 12 inch tires from a stock car......but maybe....i could....this could be cool...lol

but ya, some more info would be great. i would have to sell more camaro probably before i go ahead and do anything tho. but i can see what i can do with my parents and stuff.....maybe i could jump on it if everything is right

Remember,
the camaro will handle the power your going to throw on it, with minor modifacations...
the datsun will have to have the frame stiffened/supported, the rearend will have to be changed, and no telling what else structural wise you'll have to do to the suspension/body just to handle the ponies and torque! Ive seen a 300 z stuffed with a brute lt1..and his frame/body flexed breaking his front window!!
as for me...Camaro all the way baby!!

also,
got a friend letting go of a 6.0 ..it's just the long block (317's)..but he's asking 1500.00 and it's already been rebuilt i believe..
so add me to your budy list and i'll have stuff time to time...(ok, all the time), but not sure how long this deal will last!
