Default 68 Camaro questions

Hello everyone,

I have been reading this forum for about a week and I have found a wealth of knowledge here. This is a great forum. I sure hope you can help me out with some questions I have.

I am restoring a 1968 Camaro RS. It has a 2002 LS6 create engine, a 2002 T56 6 speed create transmission and 2002 Z51 suspension. Right now it is having the body work done to it and next month it should be ready to shoot. After it is shot, I will be working to get the engine put together and started.

I am a novice with engines but the place where it is now, there is a expert machanic there that will put the engine together for me, but right now he is busy working on the body for me. Right now, I am trying to put together a list and prices on parts I need for the engine. So this is where I hope you all can help me out.

The engine and trans are already mounted in the vehicle. I have as of now: power steering pump, altenator (sp), radiator, and oil pump. I know I need to get: throttle body, oil lines, fuel line, fuel tank (I am thinking getting it from Rock Valley), thermostat, all of the belts, radiator overflow tank, headers (possibly from JBA), exhaust system, clutch cable, starter, all of my windshield equimpment (pump, hoses, nozzles, container, bracket), Wireing harness, and a mass air flow system. I would like to install a cold air ram flow system to it also. I am putting a Vintage Air air conditioning system in. That is all that my mind can think of. I know I am missing some parts, can you guy please help me and tell which parts I am missing. Also if you know of a good place to get these parts. I have found them on different web sites but I do not know if these places are the best. Also, how do you go about starting a created engine for the first time once everything is installed and its ready to he fired up?

Does the PCM have to be reprogramed? Can a Corvette Cold Air Ram system fit in the vehicle (read history before you answer)? I was looking a getting my wire hrness from Street and Preformance? They want $900.00 for it but the I saw one of your sponsors make harness. Can he make one for this vehicle?

I little history on the vehicle. This car was bought in 2002 from a guy who had it sitting from 10 years is his back yard. The car was in bad shape. I bought it for $500.00. I stripped the car completely and the only thing I kept was the body. The frame was computered designed and built to fit the engine, trans, and suspension without doing any modifications to any of them. Once frame built, it was powder coated and then the engine, trans and suspension was installed. The body was stripped to the metal. All of the rust was cut out and replaced with new metal and reshaped. I had the firewall cut and resested 6 inches so the engine is mounted behind the front suspension, as mush as I could). Only the very front of the engine is over the front suspension. Then the whole body was acid dipped and the powder coated. So now I have no metal exposed. Right now the finishing touches of the body work is being done.

I want to post pics of this vehicle so people can see what I am talking about. I have the pics on my computer but does anyone know how I can post them here. I know there are a lot of question I asked. I just want to do this right. I have a friend that is also helping me (we started this project together) but he is very busy lately so it is hard to get ahold of him lately. This is my first time doing this. I guess I had a hair up my *** at the time.

Thanks for listening and any help you surely be appreciated.

You will have to take the VATS out of the PCM or it won't start.. Speartech can also help you with this part. There will also be other programing you might have to do to keep from throwing codes and of course tuning is always a good thing

Buy from Speartech as far as the harness goes.. only get things from S&P that you can't get elsewhere.

Shoot me the pics by email and I will host them for you

Your not far from me, let me know if you need any help.. I have a "little" bit of experience putting an LS1 in a first get.

Oh and as for the intake system you better off having one made then using a vetter unit (doubt it would work).. here is how we did mine (still has to be powdered)..

I should have pleanty of fresh air now

Steve,

Thanks for the post. I will e-mail you the pics tomorrow. Do you know the price for the harness from speartech is? Another question I forgot to ask is, can I still use the electronic throttle on this car or do I hafe to go with a throttle cable? Where did you get your air intake made from? Where is the best place to get my PCM reprogramed that know what needs to me done?

Speartech loves to use the electronic throttle. I believe that you just need the pedal and controller from the Corvette. (He has them for sale and he will do any custom programming that you might need.) http://www.speartech.com/customharnessinfo.html

You can also check into a Big Stuff 3 computer and harness. BS3 uses speed density and comes with wide band O2. I hear that it is a user friendly system. This is the way that I went on my setup. I won't have my motor running for another 2 months so I can't tell you how easy it is to program. Sounds like you have gone first class! Good Luck!
