Default couple of swap questions

I'm getting ready to purchase what I hope is a 5.3 to put into a 74 IH Scout and I've got a couple quick questions. First off, is there any way to tell a 4.8 from a 5.3 without pulling the oilpan? Anything obvious to look for like injector part numbers or maybe that barcode on the back of the head?

The second question I had was, has anybody put an older style gm standard with a old style clutch behind an LS1? I'm putting an sm420 behind it hopefully if I can get it all worked out. I'm not sure if the LS1 fbody or vette flywheel will do what I want or not.

If anybody has any info I would sure appreciate the help.

Fredo-
Start here. Then here. Then here.

Those threads contain much of the same information, although together I think they give the whole story. It looks like all you have to do is call Lakewood and they can get you what you need.

I'm not sure how to tell a 4.8 from a 5.3. You might try posting the question in the truck section. The 5.3 in my Silverado hauls my car with ease, so it should do well in a Scout.

Hey, thanks for the info Scooter....I appreciate that. I tried searching yesterday, but apparently I suck at it since I didn't find those posts. Oh, and I figured out how to tell the difference between a 4.8 and a 5.3. The only way to tell without the vehicle's vin is to pull the spark plugs, rotate the motor and inspect the pistons. If they are completely flat tops, the motor is a 4.8 and if it has a slightly dished piston, it's a 5.3. Somewhat of a pain, but other than pulling the oil pan and looking at the numbers on the crank and rods, it's the only way I've found to tell a difference.

on the back left flat part of the engine the last digits of the vin are laser etched into the block. good luck reading them though.
