Default mercon III or synchromesh

I've got a 2002 LS1/T56 from a Camaro and I went to the dealer looking to buy synchromesh oil for the tranny but he said the 2002 used Mercon III.

Whats the deal, isnt Mercno III older? Should I use the Mercon III or Synchromesh?

Thanks

No, we use GM's race fluid, part number 12341960 I think. Its about 20 bucks a bottle, they call it their syncromesh fluid, but it will not say that on the outside of the bottle. Thats the best fluid they offer. I use it everytime I do T-56 upgrades.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is cheaper and seems to work fine. Honda Z-1 ATF works well too.
