Default LS1 spotters guide

Can someone point me to a thread or other info that will allow me to tell the different LSx engines apart? I will be shopping for a LS1 soon and need to read up on the different versions.

I searched through over 400 threads so please don't tell me to use the search button!

Vette engines are easy to spot. They have the alternator high on the drivers side and use a drive by wire throttle body (no cable). F-body engines are also easy to sopt, they have have the alternator low on the drivers side and a cable actuated throttle body. Truck engine have a very different looking manifold, very tall, compared to F-bodies and Corvettes. The alternators on truck engine are mounted very high and on the drivers side (I think).

That will get you started. There are a ton of other subtle differences.

97-98 LS1s have valve covers with bolts going around their outside perimeter. The 99-04 LS1s have only four valve cover bolts, down the center of them.

Thats the main difference, since the heads are different. The later type is more desirable of course.
