Default 2005 Chevy Silverado

Hello everyone. This is my first time here and was referred here by I think his screen name is BlownChevy over at magna charger. What a great resource for GM enthusiasts. Anyways I was hoping to get some info on a project that I’m working on.

I have a 2005 short bed regular cab 2WD drive Chevrolet Silverado coming at the end of the month. My main goal with this truck is drivability and usability it has to be turn key and go but at the same time I want this thing to be pretty wild.

What I originally wanted to do was put the new corvette motor in the Truck with a radix supercharger but after talking to Magna Charger it seems I would have problems with the knock sensors on the LS2 and there doesn’t appear to be a solid solution to the problem.

So again after talking to Magna Charger he mentioned that a pre 2005 Z06 motor would bolt right up to this truck and off I go. It just seems that a pickup and the tranny would not be compatible with this engine. Does the computer on the motor control the tranny? What about shift points? Is there anything else involved how does this work? Sorry for my ignorance but I’m pretty new to a project like this. If this is possible where would I get the engine and is it still available in crate form?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks BlownChevy for all your input.

Appreciate the Help
Derek

yes the computer controls the transmission. however, if i were you, i wouldnt even be changing the wiring. so the computer can continue to control the trans no problem.

basicly what you want to do is unbolt the engine and stick another one in its place... keep your existing wiring, and just have your PCM tuned for the new motor...

the LS2 has a diffrent knock sensor setup and some other minor revisions, but any previous LS1 or LS6 motor is close enough to bolt into its place.

you'll probly run into some problems if you try to run the car intake on the truck, i think the accessorys would hit the throttlebody.... but for the most part, you can swap the basic longblock over to a car based LSx for the increased displacement and weight advantage... toss in a good cam and some ported heads, and you have a really cool truck.

Why not build this motor? Or swap in a 03ish 6.0l with 4l80e tranny(2wd model) like Parish did. Or get a motor built by Combination Motorsports.

I want this truck to look like it came from the factory. So an Ls1 or an Ls6 will plug right into this truck and all I would need to do is get the PCM reprogramed for this new engine? I was under the impression that the motor came with the program and the PCM on the truck reveived the program. Sorry I just dont know how it works. Will the stock truck tranny bolt up to this motor?

Thanks again for the help

yes. the term most often used is "tuned" not "reprogrammed"... you've changed the engines displacement, its tables, ect... but with it tuned properly, it'll work.

as far as physically bolting in, the longblock is almost identical to the stocker.

the motor is just the physical parts. the PCM (powertrain control module) is the "brain" that operates everything.
the program says: "this input is hooked to this sensor" and "this output goes to this control"
the "tune" on the PCM says: "this engines displacement is X amount. at x RPM with Y params i inject z amount of fuel"

right now, you want to keep the stock wiring harness. you want to keep the stock PCM.. you just want to change the motor and "tune"
