getting ready for the upgrade!!!
but i love my little firebird and on that note
other then weekend i was talking to a buddy of mine about several parts i was planing on getting for the 3.1 (heads cam etc....) ran up to about 1600. with out the tranny rebuild another 1200
anyway thats when he told me he could get me an LS1 w/harnes & tranny for 2000 cash and he new a guy that would be willing to refresh the motor and install everything for about the same $$$
everyone i've asked said i'd be crazy if i didn't jump on this but i need to figure out exactly what of everything i'd need for the swap
i was fw'd to this site alone with several other and have been reading almost non-stop for the past few days so i figured i'd join up and make a post
and hope to gather most of the info i'd need..... so here it is
If i wanted to transplant an LS1 into my 91 firebird what would i need rough $$$ and where should i shop
I also came across several pictures of the 98 TA's dash set up
does any know if it would fit into a 91 shell??????????/
THANKS FOR READING THIS BOOK AND ANY / ALL YOUR HELP.........
Radiator you can use the 3rd gen radiator, but you'll need the V8 version (any good parts store will have these, or you can get all big bucks and have a BeCool fancy all aluminum for ~$500)
Harness, you can mod this yourself, or have it done. Obviously the DIY is the cheapest, or you can send it (along with the ECM) to Speartech and they will mod it to your specs, including code and VATS removal for ~$750
Front springs, you supposedly can use the V6 springs, as opposed to the V8 as the LS1 is lighter than the V8
Fuel system, you need a bigger pump to feed the LS1 than the V6, a stock TPI pump will work, tho many will recommend an aftermarket pump
Rear end, no way that V6 rear is going to stand a 300+ hp LS1, you can put a 4th gen rear under your 91, but the wheels stick out about an inch from the fender, an alternate is to use the V8 rear from a 3rd gen, still not the strongest rear, but if you don't want to spend $2k on a moser/strange it'll do for the time being
Exhaust, if you want headers be ready to spend ~$1000 for headers that fit (none of the other LS1 headers fit in the 3rd gen chassis)
Now add in the fabrication/adapters for the fuel lines/k member/ and other misc bits and pieces (figure $500-$1000 for that)
BTW a T/A dash will fit in a 3rd gen firebird, tho it may not line up right with the door panels
I'm going to give you another site to read on, might be a bit better for the 3rd gen LS1 swap than this one
www.thirdgen.org
I'm sure I'm leaving some stuff out, but as you can see it's not an inexpensive proposition, IMO you'd be better off selling the V6 bird, and getting one with a TPI V8 (should be able to get it cheap as you really don't care about the condition of the motor, or even if it runs, or if it's there, since you'd be swaping the motor and trans)
Good luck, and hope I didn't discourage you
