Default which year to buy and what to look for?

I'm starting to look for an LS1 for my swap. The measuring and cogitation is done. It won't be easy, but I've decided it'll fit! <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" /> Time to buy the chunk!

Do any of you have suggestions on years/models to look for?

I'm considering using the stock exhaust manifolds. I know that the f-bodies have cast manifolds in 00+. Are the earlier stainless manifolds better, or is there not much difference besides weight?

Was there any gremlins in the early engines that were worked out in the later years that I should watch out for?

Was there any difference in the PCM programability and features from year to year? Will LS1Edit work pretty much the same through the entire range?

Where have you found to be the best place to find one? There are several on EBay, a few in this forum's classifieds. Am I better off pricewise to start scaling the local boneyards, or are they still a fairly rare find?

Thanks for any input you guys have!

Try to get an '01 or newer. The LS6 intake manifold is a must if you ever plan to do any mods later and the '01's already have it.

I got mine from ebay sort of. It ended up not meeting the reserve and I contacted the guy. We worked out a price and I had a fellow corvetteforum member go check it out before I plopped down the money.

Make sure you get an F body LS1 as the corvette's have some interesting problems as far as engine swaps are concerned.

I got my LS1 and 4l60E off of Ebay. It was out of a 98 trans am only had 15K miles on it. I picked it up for $3050.00. And that included the belt driven accesories, wiring harness, PCM, MAF, exhaust manifolds, engine compartment fuse blocks, and everything else to do the swap. The guy I got mine from goes by the name Plazacars on Ebay. He always has LS1's on Ebay, should look him up, might be able to get you what your looking for. He's a nice guy and he doesn't try to rape you on shipping like alot of the other sellers on Ebay.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Jeff, when you say that the Vette engines have some interesting problems for swapping, are you mainly referring to the transmission and fly-by-wire throttle? Is there really any other differences between these engines and the f-bodies?

Pretty much just the tranny, throttle, and the oilpan. The accessories are just in different locations. And the computer is a little different. The VATS signal is different and more complicated. The mechanical engine is all the same escept for the cam. The F-bodies actually have a slightly larger cam than the vettes.
