I highly recommend switching to the 4L60E, but if you are sticking with the 700R4, GM makes a nice conversion kit to do it. It consists of a flywheel, spacer, and longer bolts. It works with the stock 700R4 torque converter. I think the Yank kit lets you use an LS1 type of converter. Not sure though.
