Default Decisions ...I need some help

I am in the process of installing a LS1 and M6 combo into a 3rd Gen RX7. I have yet to find an LS1 or tranny and I am looking for some advice. I have about 10k to put into the engine and tranny and that includes buying them. I just want to make the right decision so I dont have to go back later. Basically I want to have a fairly reliable motor making the most HP/torque possible. Also I want to be able to hit it with 200-300hp shot of spray. Can you guys help me out and point me in the right direction or give me ideas. The more detail the better.

Thanks
Mike

Just to clarify this car is not a daily driver but also not just a drag car either.

So how much money are you really going to have left over to spend on the motor? I spent $9K on my conversion including the cost of the engine/trans. This will give us a better idea of what to recommend.

The 10k is what I want to spend on the motor and the trans. The rest of the conversion will be paid for by other $$.

Basically the conversion will cost me a total of say 15k. 10k of that going to engine and tranny the rest going to convert the rest of the car.

I got mine offa ebay as well (going on 2 years ago <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> ). Paid 2K for the complete motor and a 4l60e (which I later sold and the I bought a t56 offa someone else on ebay for 1k).

Mine had 34K miles and had some damage from the wreck it was in. Needed 2 coils, a water pump, new intake (MAP fitting was broken and you can't get that separately). The guy started it up for me when I picked it up - pretty wild to see a motor crank over just sitting on a shop floor.

You could also try your local salvage yards.

The accessory mounting for some swaps can be tricky. The C5 and FBody brackets are totally different. Also, the fuel rails are different betw. '00 and older Fbody vs. C5. I think they're the same after that. Obviously the transmissions are totally different as well.

If you wanted to be crazy, you could get a 6.0 from a truck...

I plan on running the stock internals, with a single turbo or supercharger. It seems to be the cheapest way to make big hp. I am also a big fan of forced induction. Used to have a single turbo 3rd gen. Since my LS1 is going in a ulitma kit car I am going with an aftermarket ecu and harness. Probably a tecIII or FAST unit. I can't see spending 500-1000 dollars making a stock computer work as a stand alone. Maybe a LS1 computer is different but I find it hard to belive a factory computer is that tunable.

WHen my engine dies or blows up then i'll worry about messing with the internals.

Check ebay for a motor and trans. I just picked up a 98 corvette ls1 30K for 3600. All accessories, motor mounts, harness and computer. I got it from a seller called 'fpart' (corvette/camero salvage yard) Best part is they are located in PA just north of Philly. Took me about 2.5 hours to get there from Baltimore, MD.

mkoch1,
Where in Bmore are you at. I would Love to check out the ultima. I live about 10 minutes outside 695. I was thinking about a ultima build but i would like to see someone do one first then see how well they are built and a final $$$ total.
They are badass but I dont want to hit 50k for it all said and done.

I live in glen burnie. I just started my ultima, so it hardly looks like a car yet. I would like to see your rx7 also. I sold my 3rd gen rx7 to buy my ulitma. There is a guy in VA who just ordered one also. These things are popping up all over the place.

Not going over 50K would be very hard. From the numbers I have run. A bare minimum build is going to run around 55K. The factory says you can build one for around 60K. I think realistically I am looking at about 65K. I am about 43K into now and the list of parts I still need is a mile long.

I am hoping to have the car running by the beginning of June at the latest. I am going to install it with the motor stock the do mods once its in the car. Have long have you been working on the ultima? Is the assembly tough? I wouldnt mind seeing a list of all the things you actually need in addition to the kit that comes from england.

I just started on the ultima in Late Jan. Only put in about 70 hours into it so far. Free time is hard to come by some times. So far everything I have done has been pretty strait forward.

The factory lists and sells every part you need for the car. It's just misleading because they have steps 1-17 listed on their site for about 28K. They don't really point out that you need 75% of what they call accessories http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/usa/pricesc.html

I have a very detailed list of my running costs on my web site www.markkoch.net

We will have to meet in June when you get the rx7 running. Hopefully by then I'll have my car more complete and looking more like a car.
