Default LS1 in '78 TransAm

I posted this in the Pontiac Firebird '67-2002 forum, but I just found this forum which seems like a more appropriate spot for it.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/pontiac-firebird-1967-2002/423426-ls1-78-ta.html

Short version is that I'm trying to decide between rebuilding&modding my pontiac 400 or dropping in an LS1+xmission.

What are the pros/cons of swapping in the LS1? How hard is it?

How 'worried' should I be about getting a used LS1+xmission (e.g., on e-bay) compared to getting the parts new? It seems like the used path has the advantage that it usually comes as a complete drop-in, whereas there'd be a lot of running around to get all the parts together doing it new. And of course used would be a lot cheaper ...

Does anyone know enough about CA smog laws to know if it's even legal to drop in the LS1? I've read the DMV's smog faq and it's really unclear on the requirements when doing an engine swap.

Thanks!

-Dave

I had a 77 T/A in high school. An ls1 in there would be awesome.

If you go through Ebay, just make sure they have good feedback. If there are alot of negative things said about them id prolly shy away a little bit. Ig to my engine and trans off of there a few years ago and had no problems.
