Default LS1 in a 78 Z28. Need help

Okay it's been awhile since I've been here because after last summer with all the options and complications of this I got so confused I kinda gave up and went on to motocrossing all season.

now I'm back, and I see new terms like A4 and M6, and I'm even more confused.

I'm looking to put an LS1 into my 2nd gen 78 Z28, and I want to get around 400Rwhp for now, maybe later who knows, just trying to figure out what's the easiest way to accomplish this without breaking the bank. Also, I might need a local builder to install it because www.ls1speed.com wants to charge me $3,000 to do the job. That's a bit high if you ask me, and also others have agreed.

I'm most likely going to buy my LS1 from Ebay from some of the reputed LS1 sellers out of wrecked vettes, Fbodies, and GTO's. Right now I'm looking at an LS1 from a 2004 GTO .....is there ANY reason this might be a bad choice??

Take it easy on me, I read the FAQ's and I did the Searches, but that's where I'm at right now.

I see three possible problems with an GTO motor, two are easily solved. The oil pan, windage tray, and dipstick will need to be changed probably to F-Body pieces. The exhaust manifolds may or may not fit but no biggie, lots of different styles available. The not so easy problem would be the accessory mounting, it may or may not fit, just pulled up a pic and it looks to be the same as f-body accys. so if they fit you should be ok. The A/C comp will most likely need the frame to be notched but all the accy. drives have it in the same place.

I'm not much help but
A4= 4speed automatic
M6= 6speed manual.
For your car you would probably want the f body engine. Try using the search for 2nd gen cars and see what they did.

Ah......makes sense. Just some new acronyms I didn't know about. thanks.

Okay, so the GTO motor looks to be too complicated most likely with all the new parts I might have to buy, so I'm better off maybe sticking with a Vette or Fbody LS1 ??? Damn....I was hoping it would be easy to throw in too.

After looking at a couple pics of the GTO motor it probably wouldn`t be that much more difficult, it looks like it has almost the same or the same accy drive. If you use a vette motor you will have to change the oil pan b/c vettes have huge wings on the pan and probably won`t fit. You might also have a closer fit with a truck 5.3 or 6.0L still will have to change oil pan (for ground clearance reasons) but the accys might be a closer fit, the thing to watch for would be the alt. I know someone has put a truck engine in a second gen but the search does not want to find the post mabey tomorrow?
