Default Can I convert 4wd 4l80e to 2wd?

Hello, I am in the early planning stages of Converting a G-body to LSx Power. I would like to be able to run an Lq9 and 4L80E out of an Escalade. Is there a way to make the AWD trans work w/ a 2wd tailhousing? I would like to purchase a low mileage used drivetrain and install it in the car without a rebuild in order to keep costs down.

Thanks is advance.

Yes, you just have to change the tailhousing from the 4wd to a 2wd unit. Its easier just to sell the 4wd 4l80e and buy a 2wd one....

You also have to change the output shaft. The 4x4 shaft is shorter.

Do you have to tear down the trans to change the output shaft? I would probably use the custom tail housing that has the drive for a manual speedo. Does that change the situation at all?

In order to change output shafts, you pretty much have to completely disassemble the trans (output shaft is one of the first things in and last out). Needless to say it is no small task. And if you've got to take it that far apart, maybe you ought to do a complete rebuild.

If you're looking to do 2wd, I'd suggest you take the easy route and buy the engine and trans seperately. Buy the LQ9 out of an Escalade and a 2wd 4L80E out of a 2500 pickup.
