Default distributorless igntion

Have an older engine that I would like to go distributorless with and use the coil paks for ignition. I'm going to use bigstuff 3 ecu and have been told I need to get a hall effect signal to the ecu for this to work. So what I'm wondering is how does the LS1 and LS7 motors get the signal is it off of the cam gear? crank? Just wondering exactly how the new stuff works. Pete

well, there is a cam and a crank sensor. I'm not sure if it uses both or just the crank for timing. You may want to post in the hybrid section, as I'm sure they have had experience.

crank reluctor wheel, I belive. there's a crank position sensor. I think that after '05, they went from a 24x reluctor wheel to a 58x reluctor wheel. Someone'll correct me if i'm wrong.

the LSx and LQx engines all have a crank sensor as well as a camshaft sensor.

The reulctor wheel on the crank and its sensor tell the PCM the angular position of the crank referenced to TDC. The Reluctor and sensor for the cam tell the PCM whether the engine is in the four cycles (intake/compression/power/exhaust). Between the two types of information, the PCM can command the spark timing and fuel injector timing. However, beyond angular position of the crank, the PCM needs to know engine load (derived from the manifold absolute pressure sensor) and mass air flow if installed. The spark and injector duty cycles are dependent upon all of these things plus RPM which is again determined from the reluctor wheel on the crank.

Is there anywhere I can see an exploded view of an engine with these parts or if I were to go to a parts store or summit what would I order, part #s or specific names. Any chance I could get these out of a wrecking yard? What was the first year to come out with the individual pak per cylinder? Pete
