Default '98 firebird cluster with '00 motor

I can't get my tachometer to work and I can't figure out why... Through a somewhat retarted series of events, I'm trying to use a 1998 cluster with a 2000 motor in an RX7. The wiring diagrams for the 1998 cluster show the tach input as the b13 pin, so I have that wired directly to the pcm tach output. I know the 00 cluster uses serial data, but the 98 cluster gets the signal from the pcm, so I thought this would work. The speedometer does work as does the oil pressure. The tach needle does move up the the 0 mark when powered up, but doesnt move from that spot. I'm afraid I may have to buy yet another cluster from a 99-02 car, but I already hacked up the '00 wiring harness... any ideas? I am going to be the only guy ever with a speedometer and no tach in an LS1 RX7

Thanks,
Jeff

depending on the BCM, you may need a 2000 model cluster. its EXACTLY the same fitment wise, will even use the same plug as the one you have now.
