Default Trying to test gauge to see if it works

I bought an autometer water temp gauge #5437 that looks like it's almost new off of ebay. It didn't come with a sender so I bought one from e-gauges.com. I hooked the gauge up to an 18v cordless drill battery. Ignition power to the positive and ground to the negative. When I did that the gauge's needle moved from where it was to about half way to 100. But that's all I could get it to do. Everything is wired right and I plopped the sender into a pot of boiling water and nothing. Any suggestions?

Lightbulb Temp Gauge...

Hook it up to a 12 volt & a ground, the way it should be. Then if you ground the temp. sender wire & the gauge pegs...then the gauge is good. This test applies to fuel level & a few other gauges as well. Gar
