Thumbs up Found a motor have some questions

How's it going? So the auto recycler called me today and said my motor came in. 2004 5.3 w/ AT complete motor w/ 39k for 1900 plus tax. I think that's a decent deal, it will be here next Friday for pickup. Can someone tell me what to look for to verify that it is actually a 5.3 and not a 4.8.

One other question, is there any gain in HP with the LS6 intake vs the truck if everything else stays the same? Is it worth the extra money for a car that won't see alot of track time? Thanks alot,

Jimmy

No, it will have 4.8 AND 5.3 cast into the block since they both use the same block.

Unless you get the VIN with it and know that it is the correct VIN, it is very difficult to tell a 4.8 from a 5.3. If it comes with the PCM, the VIN can be easily read from it, as long as you know it is THE PCM that belongs with the engine.

The laser etched numbers can be almost impossible to make out and decipher also.

Hmmm, that's not very good news. I was hoping it would be easier than that. What would you recommend then? Do they both use the same heads? How about TB and injector size? It's not that I don't trust them but ya never know, ya know? The truck is at the east coast location and they are pulling the motor and delivering it to the location near my home so I can't see it in the truck or verify the vin really. Thanks again,

Jimmy

I think it was chevy high performance that did a dyno comparison on three intakes one being the truck intake . I don’t remember what the other intakes were but the truck intake outperformed the other two.

Even the salvage dealers and rebuilders have a difficult time identifying the 4.8 and 5.3 without dissassembly; PERA (Production Engine Remanufacturers Association) has a bulletin on this.

If you can pull the spark plug and look inside, the 4.8 will have a flat top piston, and the 5.3 will have a dished top piston; exception will be an L33, but it has an aluminum block.
