Default water

well the 87ss swap is still moving forward. all the fluids are in. I started the thing and let it run a little. damn does this motor heat up fast. I shut it off after a minute or 3. checked the water. then started it again for maybe 2 minutes. the heater hoses are warm. tstat seems to be closed. start it again for 2 minutes or so. finally the tstat starts to open and the radiator starts getting warm. the crossover (vent) tube is hot going back to the radiator.
So, I did read here that these motors are run hot. My question is do they also heat up that fast ? How much water does an LS1 or ls6 block hold ?
Any other thoughts are really appreciated. Fans.. I'm gonna mount a 16" puller fan inside the original cowl. Think it'll pull enough air?

I noticed that mine comes up to temperature quick too. I have a 180 thermostat and it reaches that within just a few minutes. But then it does not go past it. I have a 16 inch puller fan and it is keeping it cool just fine. In fact it does not come on very often, unless I am in traffic for quite a while. I do have a pretty large 3 core radiator.

it comes up to temp quick because the thermostat is on the intake side of the waterpump.. the pump doesnt move much water at all until the thermostat opens.. because of this, it heats up fast... but once it gets there, it should stay there steady..

Yep, faster heat up times = less cold start emissions and less time until the heater works.

When you filled it up with water did you fill it via the upper radiator hose? If you fill it via the radiator cap the thermostat will not let the water flow through and it will heat up very fast because there is no coolant in the block .

Yes, I used the upper radiator hose. I had read that the heads don't always fill. so, I filled it till the vent flowed water. I did have to add some water to it, and it isn't warming up as fast as the first start. Drove it around the block with open exhaust, it certainly has power. Felt like a kid for a few seconds there...
