Default Installing Oil Pan

So I got a truck Oil pan for my LS1 and I'm ready to install it. I'm a bit confused. According to http://www.hotrodlane.cc, I'm supposed to use silicone when I install it, but the gasket that's on the pan is riveted on there, and I won't be able to get silicone under it. Also, they mention lining it up correctly and everything. I don't understand why that's necessary for the oil pan to be lined up within .01". What am I missing?

http://www.hotrodlane.cc/PDFFILES/oi...structions.pdf

That's where I"m getting this info from.

Thanks,

Mike

I just removed a factory installed ls6 oilpan and noticed that they used a light amount of sealer only at the 4 corner areas of the block surface where the edge of the bearing caps form a joint. There was no sealer used on the flat pan surface itself. The sealer the factory used was white and was still a little sticky. I used some hylomar sealer when I installed the new pan, don't know if that was the best product or not.

Yes, I agree. Also, the pan needs to be flush with the back side of the engine block. If you dont, and it sticks out from the block, the trans will not fit flush with the engine and cause problems with your trans.

correct. If I remember right one of my manuals recomends installing a little silocone gasket stuff at the front of the oil pan where it attaches to the front cover. That was a while ago but im pretty sure thats the way it went.

you're supposed to use a touch of rtv only at the place where the block, the front cover, and the oil pan come together. same on the rear. the bottom of the front and rear covers should be flush with the bottom of the block to provide a good seal surface for the oil pan. just remember your oil pan bolts to the block, front cover, rear cover, and the tranny, it makes everything a little stronger.
