1963 Impala - looking to put in a Ls1 what is needed?
Hello,
I am new to the american powered rides. so bear with me. I am looking for some information on swapping out my 283 powerglide from my 1963 impala to a Ls1? this is what I am looking to accomplish.
Ls1 - conversion - 450 - 500 HP - with a/c
Tranny - automatic? Probably a turbo 400 maybe with overdrive -(if I can locate one) - open to suggestions
Change out the front end to a newer rack and pinion
new drive shaft
rear end? I have heard the Ford 9" 12 bolt is nice or any 12 bolt?
disc brakes conversion
what will be needed to fit this type of setup? Has anyone done this before?

Search for impalas on here I think I've seen some before.
450-500rwhp out of an LS1 is pushing it NA, that is about the top of the spectrum and with about another 3-4k invested. Is this at the wheel or flywheel?
If you want auto might as well get an LS1 w/a 4L60E to keep it on the cheap.
It will fit, you just need some motor mount adapters and possibly relocate the A/C compressor.
Start reading on here and it will answer most of you questions.
Look in the Swap FAQ sticky at the top.

Yes I know that 450 - 500 is high for HP, that is in the long run for now I am looking to acheive at least 400 at the wheel with as easy of an install as possible.
I know the 4L60E is ok for the tranny, but is it strong enough for over 400 hp?
What do you think about the rear end?
Front end steering? what can I use?
Thanks for all the suggestions.
