5.3/5.7 Hybrid
Looking to do a reliable, inexpensive build and about 400RWHP on a 2nd Gen Camaro.
I have a LS1 block, crank, heads and intake. But NONE of the sensors or electronics, wiring or fuel system. This is the stuff that adds up fast.
I'm thinking the best bang for the buck would be to buy a $1200-$1500 low mile 5.3 pullout with everything on it and computer and swap out the block with my 5.7 LS1. Then add new pistons/rings and a cam and lifters/springs. I could also buy a LS2 block since it has the same stroke as the 5.3/5.7
So does this make $$ sense?
Keep the 5.3 heads or use the ls1 heads?
Use the ls1 or get a ls6 intake?
I need a cable TB, what size for 400HP?
Basically I'd have a ls1 when I'm done right? (I know, not a real one)
Does anyone know if all the electronics are the same between a 5.3 and 5.7 GENIII or GEN IV. Meaning any reason I couldn't swap either a iron or alum block with the ls1 block and use either a 5.3 GEN III ir IV computer?

sensors are the same on all GenIII motors, with Gen IV motors some sensors were moved around, but for the most part they are the same. you can get a 5.3 for like 600 bucks.. so yeah, id say that it would be worth it rather than trying to track down all sensors..
might as well sell your LS1 and then buy a 6.0 L truck motor... basicly a cast iron LS2 but much cheaper. you will have to switch oil pan to an LS1 pan, and unless you are going to run a carbed intake you will most likely have to swap water pumps in order to run the LS1/2 lower intake mani.

aluminum 5.3
I bought an all aluminum 5.3 out of a trailblazer ext or ssr for $1,900 brand new from schram auto parts in michigan. Looking to get the same HP. should be cheaper than the LS1. It's setting in a Gen 2 camaro subframe in a '55 studebaker pickup.

the weight diffrence is a moot point. its 100 lbs, thats like a 2% weight increase which is essentaly nothing. if you are worried about 100 lbs you should most likely go on a diet too.
6.0s are more sought after becuase they are better. if you dont care about performance that much buy a 5.3, but if you are serious about hp and want growing room get the 6.0
