my old 4.3l in my 2001 had 28,000 on it when we bought it, with supercharger, would suck down gas usually about 11mpg this was 93 octane, so i wont be used to what its like running not only 89, but most definitally better mileage even with my cam

depends how much you can get an engine/transmission for, how much power you wanna make, and how much you can fab yourself.

say anywhere from $1500 and up

How much more complicated would it be for an OBDI 4x4? My '94 S-10 needs an engine, and I've been contemplating an LS1, simply because of the prices of used engines. Much cheaper to buy a low-mileage LS1 than a crate 350, plus the LS1 is a bit more potent.

Only things holding me back are the facts that the truck is an OBDI vehicle, it's 4x4, and I don't know how many local shops would be willing to tackle the project.

For one,if they dont get any better mileage than a carb, why wast the money.I have done them ALL except the lsx in s10's.I'm not the one to just puta lsx motor in and say,"I got a lsx but it only gets 12 mpg".Yea my carbed 10 sec blazer only gets 10,.So the whole purpos of a lsx motor in a s10 is still have power AND gas mileage! For me anyway. If not Ill just go buy a camaro

4x4 makes it a fair bit more complicated.

1.) Oilpan: You need a custom piece. Fabricate your own (my method) or buy one (Turbotime is supposed to be making them for ~$500)
2.) Exhaust: No stock manifolds fit without modification. They can be modified, but you're on your own there. There aren't commercially available headers either.
3.) Engine / Transmission / Tcase location is much more critical. For a 4wd you've got 2 driveshafts to worry about and pinion angles on 2 pumpkins to make sure are correct.

Good luck finding a shop to tackle it. There aren't many who would be willing to take it on. And you'll pay for the ones that will take it on. But that's my opinon.

Here's what I can tell you: I've got about $7k+ in my conversion. That includes a good used 6.0L ($1200) a good used 4L80E (don't like the 60E in an AWD application, $800), a rebuilt transfer case ($1000), reprogrammed computer and a complete new harness ($1100) and converting my truck motor to C5 accessories (probably another $500). I built the oil pan, exhaust from the motor to a JBA 3" Cat back system ($300), and transmission crossmember. Basically everything between the AC condesor and the axles were either replaced or modified. I did all the work, and worked on it a fair bit every week, but not 80hrs a week (probably 25hrs a week with some vacation time in there too), which is why I started in April and it wasn't done until October. All in all, I'm pleased with the results.

Element, if you wanted to go a GEN 1 motor like a 5.7 TPI, or a GEN 1 with TPIS Intake (similar to the LT1 intake), the oil pan, headers, radiator, good instructions are available through JTR.

Yes, I should have mentioned that....The classic SBC is a much easier chunk to fit in. 4.3 V6 accessories bolt up, all the parts you'd need are available, etc.

After doing some search and some research.I'll stick with my original plans on the ls1 and not do the ls2.Do my bolt ons and be plenty happy.Still think I'll be able to get at least 15-18mpg with the Patriot heads and cam,I'll be happy.

Thats nuts, in my 98 S10 ZR2 i get about 19 or 20 in the city. And on the other trucks, my buddys 2500HD 6.0 gets 13mpg in the city compared to another friends brother who has the 5.3 and gets 18. I couldnt believe the difference, something wrong with those 6.0s maybe...

what all stays and what all needs to be deleted on the computer as far as the tune ?Does the deletion of the EGR have ANY affect on mpg or anything else as far as that goes.It wont have the cats on it or the rear 2 o2's,I know that much.
