Default Where to splice for VSS signal

Hey guys I know someone can help me on this one. Im trying to figure out which wire from my VSS I need to splice into for my autometer speedo. The autometer tech told to look for a yellow coming out of the trans, but all I have is a solid purple and a solid green. This is on a '98 LS1 T56 with a TPIS wiring harness. Also, is it safe for me to cut and lengthen the entire VSS wires?

I do not remember colors but I can check that when I get home tonight if you wish. I looked in my Helms manual since you know your colors I would assume you found the connector. I followed my harness from the connector up until it was just above the transmission bell housing area and spliced into it there. I cut the wire and sent the signal to my autometer speedo and then sent the signal out from the speedo back to the other end of the cut VSS wire for the PCM to use. It seems to work fine. Although, I have not driven or calibrated it just yet. I have it up on jack stands and have gone through all 6 gears and the speedo is running around 120 mph, way off but at least it is doing something. One thing that is wierd is that everytime I start the car, the speedo needle does a little dance before settling down. I am assuming this is because I have not calibrated it yet. As for the PCM, I am not sure whether it is happy with the signal I am sending it. No autotap yet.

http://www.ls1.com/98pinpcm.htm

Go here to help trace the wire back.

I believe the Autometer instructions specify *not* to use the VSS signal FROM the PCM, rather to use the raw VSS signal TO the gauge, then the wire out from the gauge to the PCM. We have it this way on our Cobra, and it's worked well.

I just finshed setting up the speedometer in my 1963 Corvette with LS1. You are correct in using the yellow raw output wire from the trans., then out from the gage to the PCM. The gage will show very high speed untill set, set it soon as you can as it is running up milage on the gage at a high rate! Setting is simple, lay out a 2 mile course or follow someone with a very accurage speedometer. At the start of the course kill you engine. While starting the motor hold the trip meter in. It will go to 80 miles per hour and stay, the trip meter starts running at a very fast pace while driving the course. At the end of the course push in and hold the trip meter it will set its self and return to zero. Thats it!

Hmmm... Everyone keeps telling me to use the yellow wire, which I dont have. Does anyone know why I might have a green and a purple, instead of a yellow? Which one is supposed to be the yellow wire? Since PIN 7 is the yellow wire on the chart, is that the one I should use, even though mine isnt yellow (kind of common sense, but I just wanna check before I start cutting)

Are any of you guys running automatics in your applications, where you use the raw signal to the guage and then from the guage to the PCM? When I have it hooked up like this my tranny will not shift? I hooked it up to the line that is supposed to go to the guage for a stock F-body and the guage works fine and then starts jusmping all over the scale. Im not sure about what to do now. Any Ideas?
