Default Automatic or 6-speed

Ok as my car's body is almost finished being painted... I cant decide to go with either of the transmissions. I have the 6-speed and a built th-350, and my dilema is this... its a 79 camaro and there is no kit for the 6sp to bolt right in but there is for the 4l60e so I will probably have to get a crossmember made for the 6sp which is no big deal. But once in my car, it will take up only about 2/3 of the original hole in my console which is no problem to make a plate for either to cover the rest of the hole up but it may look out of place and in traffic and all ill be shifting around and I want my car to be as comfortable to drive around on the weekends as possible. 6speeds are fun but Im not sure if I want that. Now the th-350/400 will bolt right up and tci now makes a torque converter for just these applications and as far as i know I can use my stock crossmember for the tranny and also if I go that way I will get an overdrive unit too. Also I wont have to modify my console and I can use my B&M megashifter that is in it now which was made to fit in my console and does it pretty nicely. But I do not know if I can change the ls1's computer so that it wont have a heart attack when I drive it with one of the TH-xx engines and also that the computer tells the gauge what speed it is but with one of the th-xx trannys the speed is coming from the tranny itself which is no big deal to get a mechanical speedo and the rest of the gauges electronic I dont think. But to handle the power and all I will have from the ls1 I will need/want a nice shift kit which as you know will make it shift harder and quicker which wont be as nice either when Im just cruising around to be jerked around by the tranny shifting, but then again I do not know how hard they shift with the kits in them. Well, in the end its a weekend car so I guess how it shifts with either tranny doesnt matter but I just want some opinions on what you guys think. If I go with the auto it will also have a lockup converter so gas mileage wont be so huge a deal either and price dont really matter as I dont plan on being done with my car this week or anything.. I plan on having 500-600hp and will take it to the strip once in a while too.

any info would be a great help guys!!

Mike

I have an option of the 350 or 400 but I dont plan on having 57432904hp at the wheels so the 400 may not be the best choice...350s can be pretty strong! and dont take as much power to turn as the 400s do

What gears do you have in the rear?

A six speed with hwy gears (like 2.73) will be worthless for 6th and possible 5th gear due to lugging the engine.

I am planning on 4.10 rear and with T56 6th gear reducing the ratio by the .5 overdrive( makes rear seam like a 2.05). Best of both worlds.

I was thinking along the lines of 3.75 and up, but no more than 4.10

The computer can be reflashed to run with a thxx. You just use a 6 speed program and it is OK, since it would not shift the trans with a 6 speed anyway. You will still have to get it a VSS though.
