Default MAF or not?

I'm trying to figure out how to plumb the air intake.
The stupid MAF looks ugly and is a limit for my ideas how to route the intake.
I know I don't need the MAF if I delete it in the computer program.

I don't really know why I should keep the MAF.
But it has to be some reason since it came with the engine from the manufacturer.

Does anyone know why to keep the MAF??

If you delete the MAF.. you will have to get someone (with a dyno) do a Speed Density Tune.

The MAF Setup is a better setup for normal or mid setups.. SD wouold better fit you if you were racing more. But many do run a SD setup on there DD's.

Suggest you research it in the PCM Diagnostics & Tuning forum.
Here is one thread to start you off..

I just fired up my 5.3L tonight with Speed Density, I did a swap into my 67 pickup, but never bought a mass air sensor. I just set the three MAF related codes to Type C codes, no Mil, and left the x in the boxes (tuner cat)

The computer then caculates an air flow (as seen with scan tool) so other tables that are based on air flow still work just fine.

This is what it looks like on my scanner, anyone chim in if they know different. I read on a post somewhere that they thought trans problems could come up if MAF was disabled. I dont know.

From what I saw tonight , Speed Density worked just fine, Fuel Trims were within 5% Bone stock motor.

Unless you're racing this thing all the time I wouldn't delete the maf. It helps alot for start up and idle. they can handle a ton of power also. We used a maf with our 800rwhp turbo car.
