All post '98 T-56 the same? Sorry for the newbie question, but can a T-56 from an '06 GTO be bolted up to any gen 3 engine?
I understand a LT1 six speed requires some modifications to do so, but will this one?
Mainly I'm concerned whether I can buy the tranny and keep looking for a 5.3L or truck 6.0L, or will I be stuck looking for a LS2 (which I can't afford).

Yes, the 06' GTO will bolt up to the Gen III/IV engine. You will be ok.
The LT1 T56 will require a change of Input shaft and Trans to bellhousing adapter swapped to a Gen III/IV plate to work with a Gen III/IV engine.
