engine ID question

how can you tell a 5.3 vortec from a 4.8 if they are out of the truck already?

I had the same issue.
They both have the same block, just different diameter pistons. I checked the numbers on the back, passenger side of the block. Also there will be a laser etch number on the side of the aluminum head. I should match up with the VIN number.
