Default third gen steering help

hey, i have a third gen that i am building with a ls1.
its main purpose is drag strip,my question is anyone running a manual rack instead of the gear box,
or would i be just as good to use a lighter manual gear box.
i just dont know how well the gear box and arms are for drag racing
thanks for the help

You can add a manual box... if its strictly for drag racing, you can add a rack too if you want. Most guys wont use a rack on a street car, because the steering ratio gets messed up. But for a track only set up, I think it would be ok.

Anyway... The S10s had a manual box I believe. That I think fit with minimal work. You should really post this over on thirdgen.org since this is a thirdgen question and is independant of the LS1 part of your project. There will be much more info over there on the S10 box, or upgrading to a rack.

You can go tubular with the k-member and a-arms, and get a rack mount built into the k-member also... Again, if its drag only, you could do pretty much whatever you want up there.

Like ghettocruiser said, you can pretty much do anything if it's a drag car. The problem with rack and pinions on third gen cars is you lose a considerable amount of turning radius. But since you are wanting to go with a manual rack, if I remember right it's a MG rack that has the correct amount of travel to correct the turning radius. I'll have to double check and get back to you if it's an MG for sure.

You can use the s-10 box it's a direct bolt in, you will need to chage the pitman arm to a unit from a third gen to keep the steering geometry correct.
