Default custom firewall question

im currently doing the body on my 67 chevelle , I would like to smooth the firewall ,basically to neaten it up and paint it as i would the rest of the engine comp.like a semi flat or gloss.it seem like the trend is to go over the existing and blend it in near the steering ,brakes and wiper motor area, or should they cut out the entire piece and patch it in . any input is appreciated also what guage steel should i use? thanks JOHN

John,

Im no expert, but what I think they do most of the time is retain the upper area(brake master, mount and upper firewall) and body work it.Then replace the lower firewall, trans tunnel area. I think 16-18 gauge is ok.
