What kind of steering hose do I use?
Hi everyone, I am in the middle of installing an LS2 into a 1966 GTO and was wandering if anyone knows what I could use for a power steering hose from the LS2 Pump to the steering box on the 66 GTO?

On my 65 cutlass, I took the stock LS1 hose and my stock 65 hose to the local hydralic shop. They built a compression hose to adapt the 2 hard lines from the 2 units into a new hose. The return line is just a rubber hose as you know just clamp one on.

not sure how close your setup is to the 2004 vette setup, which i used in my chevelle, but the res. had a large return to the pump, which i used a gm hose, and i used an adapter fitting, i think it was #6 AN to metric o ring at the pump, and a #6 AN to flare in the steering box(for the press side)-i had a hose made up at a store that did hyd lines (i orig made one from stainless hi pres but didnt trust the fittings, screw in type) then i used a 3/8 return hose, res to steering box, and a #6 end on the box side, with an AN to flare in the box
i dont remember the thread sizes in the box, something like 11/16 and 5/8, or 9/16, i never remember to write it down, lol
do not use any heater hose, the p/s fluid will desolve it over time, which i found out years ago in the middle of a 1/4 mile pass

If your not going to use OEM type of hoses and lines, make sure you use a hose that is make for the pressure that the Power Steering can create, as Dhutton stated, Russell makes a Stainless Steel braided hose (powerflex) that is teflon lined to handle up to 2500 psi. and adapter to match.

Go to the local hydraulic supply store that can make hoses for you. We used Parker "SAE100-R5" series "206" hose (2000psi for a -6 hose at 250F) and Parker series "26" JIC 37deg crimp fittings. Use heater hose to mock-up what you need for lengths, then go to the hyd store. The JIC fittings are about 1/2 or less the cost of the Russell AN fittings, and are compatible with them.
FYI, the GM power steering pump operates at about 1200psi, and the SAE100-R5 hose is compatible with petroleum base hyd fluids, lube oils diesel fuels, ATF, etc. Do a Google search and you will find compatibility info and much tech stuff.

Along this subject, my power steering roars at me when I'm idling and turn the wheel ex backing out of the garage. Once I get going and up on the rpm this noise goes away. I'm running the modern power steering fluid with ls1 pump and 65 stock gearbox. Any of you guys having this problem? Or does anyone know what may be happening to cause this?

If it's whining it's usually air trap, roaring is usually stress.

Try turning the steering wheel lock to lock back and forth a few times at a speed where it doesn't normally whine (say ~1200 RPMS) in park or stopped of course. This has always relieved my noise whenever I would diconnect a line from my PS rack.

I would say you most likely have air in the gear. Lift the front end up on jackstands, and with the engine off, and the cover to the P/S resevoir open, slowly turn the steering wheel lock to lock for about 10 minutes. That wil usually bleed the air out. It takes FOREVER to bleed the air out driving the car. Also check and make sure that the fluid is in good condition. Did you have any issues with the gear before the swap?

Get you're 1966 power steering pump and remove that same part that threads into the pump. There will be a spring, and possibly a valve below that (been a while since I did this)
You should be able to install the 1966 fitting into the newer pump. You now have regular flair fittings on both the pump and gear box, find an off the shelf steering hose that works for you.
I've got pictures SOMEWHERE of this...i'll see if I can find...

Not sure it is the same but I put a belt acc. form a 2001 s10 blazer on my 350 I had in the chevelle. The hose for the s10 setup have the o-ring ends so I relized that the tubing was about the correct size so I just cut the end off both the hose from the s10 and chevelle. Using the flare nut off the chevelle and a flareing tool I re-flared the tubing on the s10 hose and screwed it in. Like I said not sure if it is the same just wanted to throw it out there.
