Default 6.0 LS for G Body swap

I have read several posts and am looking for your best recommendations for a LS/T56 swap in a 1986 Monte Carlo SS. I am currently 80% done with a LT1/T56 swap but love the LS motor power.

I have the fuel injection tank and lines in place with a Walbro pump. I plan to use the BRP swap kit for the engine mounts, trans crossmember, headers and oil pan. Clean, simple and well engineered. I am running a GN rear with all Hotchkis suspension front and rear.

GM hot cam possibly, GM harness to run it if I don't get the computer with it. I have some ported 243s and an LS6 intake to help it breathe some too. I have an SLP billet flywheel that I was going to use an LS7 clutch with.

Locally I have found 4 6.0 motors. What year do I need to look for to find the motor that will accept the LS1/2 flywheel and T56? I read a post where it mentioned the face of crank accepted a flat or curved flexplate based on transmission - 4L60E vs 4L80E. I would rather not have to run a spacer.

Thanks for your input guys.

Tom

Are you trying to reuse the LT1 T56. It has a different input shaft and I do not believe it will work with the LS series. About all the 6.0 should be able to use the LS1/2 flywheel.

Any year 6.0 should be fine. I think id want to choose the one with the lowest miles.

Ill second what ddcarter said. You will want an LS1 T56, or you could do an aftermarket T56 like a DD unit. That is what I am doing.

If you do the aftermarket T56, you'll need the McCleod flywheel 460535 I think is the P/N.

The 99-00 6.0L motors are the ones with iron heads and a longer crank. The LS1 T56 will bolt to a 01 and newer motor.

You should check into this a bit though since you already have a LT1 t56. The crankshaft flange depth for the LT1 and the long crank 99-00 6.0L should be the same so you could probably use the LT1 T56 without changing the input shaft. I don`t know what you could do for a flywheel though.

Guys, thanks for the input. Much appreciated!

As for the T56. I have a good strong one for the LT1 built by RSGear in NY a few years back with the good parts. Recently I found a LS1 case and gears from a core return. My plan is to swap the good parts into the LS1 case since the front face is different to mount the push vs pull throwout bearing and of course the different input shaft length.

Flywheel? Either a billet SLP flywheel I have (LS1) if it will mount properly or an LS2 flywheel. I am thinking an LS7 pressure plate will do well.

If I was going automatic this would never be an issue. I just don't want to chase the wrong direction with the wrong motor. Thanks!

Mileage being an issue, there are 2 2002's. One has 80k the other has 92 k. I know these engines will run past 200k with no severe wear issues. But like you said 388bu, I would opt for the fewer miles.

If you go with the 2002 the LS1 or the LS2 flywheel should work fine.

Thanks ddcarter, much appreciated.

Next summer's Hot Rod Power Tour is my goal. But then there is nothing wrong with taking the Z28 either.

Even better, just getting the car out and on the road with a strong powerplant after four years of it being in storage will be reward enough!
