Question '97 TA Vert Wheel Fitment

Hi, I ran this thread in the wheel and tire area also, but don't seem to be getting many responses, so I thought I would try the vert thread.

Hello, I'm hoping someone in this mass of F-body knowledge can help me out. I have a bone stock '97 TA WS6 vert with stock 16" wheels and I'd really like to upsize to wider and bigger diameter wheels. I understand '97 and earlier 4th gen verts have less room for wide rim/tire combos in the rear and I could use some help in determining what fits. I'd like to run 18" diameter with as wide a tire as possible without requiring any mods to the car (the car is not lowered, all stock). Can you guys recommend a wheel and tire size (including wheel offset) to achieve my goal?

Thank you,

Scott

I'll try my best to help you out.

My rears are 18"x11" with a 50mm offset, the tires are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup's, the widest of all the 315's. On my Trans Am, they fit about as good as I could have hoped for. Perfectly centered in the wheel well, a 1/4" more either way (in or out) would have caused some problems.

Don't misunderstand me... No 11" wide or larger wheel will be able to be bolted up with out some sort of "massaging".

All F-body's seem to be a little different when it comes to tire fitment.

Some say that they bolted up 315's without ever having to lift up a hammer. Others are under there swinging away for hours just to get the same wheels/tires to fit... it's a crap shoot!

With my combo, the level of "massaging" was kept to a minimum. I rolled the fender lips, cut off half of the jounce bumpers, and spent about 1 minute with the BFH to do some minor clearance work on the inner fender well. All in all, a very painless install.

Make sure you have a adjustable panhard rod, your rear will need to be centered perfectly for this set-up.

Take a look at the pics, and see if you like the look of this offset... Hope all this helped!

Very Nice.

I have the 18"x9.5 ZR1's on the rear with the 275's I could easily mount 295's on them and I still have plenty of room.

I am getting a set of 15"x10" weld pro stars next week with a 7.5" backspacing. I am looking to mount MT 26x11.5 ET Streets on them. Strickly for track days. I will let you know how it goes. Have to get my new adjustable panhard bar on today.

Those 315's look great.

Not sure why the LT1 ('94-'97) 'verts rear wheel wells would be different than LS1s ('98-'02). The reason the '97 WS6 'verts (and I'd imagine the '96-'97 SS 'verts too) came w/ 16" rims was GM didn't feel the 'vert could handle the 17" wheel/tire/suspension combo that came w/ WS6 & SS as well as coupes, so they stayed w/ 16" wheel/tires. They improved the chassis strength / stiffness in '98 so that 'verts could handle the 17" setup. Didn't think "tire fit" had anything to do with that.
