I've gone with the 16" firebird rims and you have to do some work to make them fit. Take a hammer and bang down the upper ball joint a bit. Then you have to shave some of the aluminum off of the upper control arm to the sides of the ball joint. It's been done many times and I've never heard of an issue. It's a slow process since you'll have to fit them on and take a little more off as you go. Another option might be to remove some of the inside of the rim for the clearance...
As mentioned, the 17" is not an issue with clearance but you loose some of the sidewall flex.

I can certainly understand that. It's not much modification though. Here's a pic of the passenger side clearanced and one of the drivers side stock for comparison. It's really not much of a difference but it takes a while if you don't want to take too much off.
