Default looking at 01 Z06... questions.

Hello all. I'm looking at an 01 Z06 at a dealer right now. Just wondering if this is a good deal, and I'd appreciate any feedback (positive or negatve) or things to look out for:

--Car: 01 Z06, bone stock, Torch Red w/matching powdercoated original wheels
--price: $18,900..somewhat negotiable.
--mileage: 78K
--condition: some small chips in paint, not noticeable unless you're looking for them. Engine Bay is a little dirty (expected for 78k miles) but will clean up easily. Interior is in good shape, clean, no rips/tears/etc.
--Dealer has ALL service records (all work done at dealership), CARFAX, clean CA title.

My concerns:
- is 78k high miles for a Z06? I know its only about 10k/year, but it seems kinda up there. Will I be running a greater risk of breaking stuff WHEN (not if), i start to mod?
- will i regret not holding off and finding a good deal on an 02+ Z?
- how is mod-ability of an LS6 vs an LS2? (I kinda wouldnt mind picking up an LS2 C6 Z51).

Thanks,
-Charlie

If you're going to modify it and race it, the C5Z is a better platform to use on the track over an LS2 C6. The LS2 generally responds better to bolt-ons, but you can just as easily do the same mods to the LS6.

There's a guy with a C5 running around with over 300K miles on it, so actually 72K is nothing relatively speaking. It depends on how those miles got on it. My mother-in-law's 2001 C5 Coupe has close to 70K, and it still runs beautifully. But of course she doesn't race it. 72K miles in MY hands would get a heck of a lot more wear and tear than 72K miles in her hands. Hell, I've probably ragged on my C6Z more in the last 1000 miles than she's ever done in her C5.

Guess I should have mentioned this in my 1st post, but I don't think car will ever see a track. All street car. I'd be happy with ultimately 400-450rwhp. I just want a fun weekend car. Not sure if I'd go with a C5Z, or pick up a C6 so i can have the targa top.

I would say it's all about which one you like as far as looks and feel. It should be equally easy to reach your power goals with the LS6 or LS2.

Thanks for keeping my head cool!

I've been half-heartedly looking for a month or so now. I dont' think I'll be truly ready to buy for a few more months (My tax return goes to cementing the back-yard, not a down-payment for a Vette like i was hoping... the joys of home-ownership, eh?)

Okay, if you're after a comfortable street cruiser, then I'd vote for the C6. Look at my sig. I went from a C5Z to a C6 Coupe, and the C6 Coupe even with the Z51 option was a bit too cushy to me, so now I have the best of both worlds in the C6Z.

But you probably won't find too many C6 cars sub $20K yet.

If you buy a 2001 model, make sure you see the service history first. Some cars had oil consumption issues, and the rings were replaced by GM. They are fine after that...and some cars had no problems at all.

Search the corvette forum for sale section.... tons of deals to be had. I would opt for an 02+ Z06.... 01's had some oil consumption issues that you can research by VIN #, but not something that would deter me, but the 01's don't have HUD if that matters to you. The one reason I would go with an 01 is to get the speedway white color.

It all comes down to looks. Happy hunting!
