If you going in that far, you modest well forge the motor.

Personally, I would have done a stock bore Ls2, Ls3 combo and toss the LS1.

If you do a search on the LS2 timing chain, you will see pics of the difference. A much better piece than LS1. Are you putting the ARP crank bolt in? Might not be a bad investment.

For the money you're spending on the Ls1, you could of just as easily thrown in a stock LS3 some headers and CAI and have been done with it.

It's Much thicker. Throw that and a ported and shimmed LS6 pump from TexasSpeed on it too. Might as well Also since they'll have the engine apart they will likely bump the oil pressure sender and it will go bad after too long and you'll be wondering why it says you have maxed out oil pressure. So you should change that out too Also might as well build it to a 408 lol kidding on that part but the rest, i'm serious

It is not a matter of botching but a matter of time.

Just wanted to update this thread and say I finished the job tonight finally...

It was an experience. The most complex engine pull I have done. All I had to go off was an internet magazine article.

The new crank, crank bearings, rod bearings, balancer, chain, oil pump, and labor ended up being about $1200 at the shop I always use. I had the shop do the short block, and I did the top-end, which is a straight-forward pushrod v8 deal.

I don't know what I spent in gaskets, but it wasn't a whole lot.

I did have to replace both the water pump and the power steering pump. If your crank bolt spins out...check your accessories. On my water pump the pulley was out of round and went slightly in and out. On the power steering pump the shaft was warped. The other accessories were fine.

I left all the injectors and wiring on the manifold, and simply flipped it over backwards and zip-tied it to the torque tube. I didn't take any pictures and the harness ended up being real straight-forward due to this trick, because everything stayed relative to the manifold.

Every collector stud/bolt broke during dissassembly. There are 6 of them, but GM sells them in packs of 5...go figure.

I put the TR224 cam in. I haven't had the car above 3,500, but drive-ability is like stock. Seems like a great upgrade so far. I will be getting the computer tuned soon.

I also put the ls7 clutch in, which seems great.

It really wouldn't have been that bad of a project, except that I had a hernia surgery while the engine was in the machine shop so I had to put it back together on vicadin with ice bags in my pants hahah.... sigh

If anyone has any questions about doing this job, feel free to PM me and I'll offer whatever insight I can.

The LS7 has a different crank nose for the sump pump so I'm not sure that you'll have that problem.

More common on the LS1 / LS6's. Haven't heard too many issues with the LS2/LS3's.
