Default Vortexx Rammer or Callaway Honker???

these products look like the function in the same manner, do they yield similar results? Are they both better than the Vararam and Halltech Venom?

The Calloway looks first class and makes decent power. The Vararam provides good results at the track on C-6's.

Generally speaking, they both make about 11hp in most test. I choose the honker setup for my vette, I do notice that the filter stays cleaner longer than just an open filter element type. Hell after a day or two you want even remember it's on your car.

I think the Vararam makes slightly more power than the Callaway. The Vararam is a bottom feeder. It sits directly in the airflow. The Callaway is a back feeder. It is still in outside air but is not scooping air as directly as the Vararam.

All that being said I'd NEVER use a Vararam. I went with a Callaway. I have 2 reasons why the Vararam is not for me.

The build quality of the Vararam has been questioned in thread after thread on Corvette Forums all over the net. The seal between the upper and lower box does not stay put and this can allow unfiltered air to get into the engine. The second reason is that more people seem to hydrolock their engine with the Vararam than with any other CAI. Because the Vararam sits so low it's easier to suck water up then with the Callaway. The Callaway sits up much higher than the Vararam.

I have read one person who said they hydrolocked their engine with the Callaway compared to multiple people with the Vararam. I don't drive my Corvette in the rain very often but this was a bit of a concern.

My main reason is I just don't want to have to check the Vararam weekly to assure it is not allowing unfiltered air into my engine.

Actually the way it was explained to me is that the honker setup used pressurized air feeding into the intake from the high pressure area were the air feeds into the lower radiator opening instead of just sitting directly were the air first enters( low pressure area ) and the callaway z06 racing team just won the international racing championship against cars like ferrari, ford gt, aston martin, porsche etc. using the same type of setup, racing is the best proving ground.

this looks very similar to the Honker and Rammer sett up. What puts the Honker over the top, abpve the rest? Does it seal better, pressurize better??? Would the Xcelerator or Rammer yield better gains? Does anyone still sell the xcelerator kit for c5's?

They are pretty much all the same performance. The xcelerator was a low priced clone of the Honker selling for around $275.00 There never was any xcelerator kit for the C5, only C6 LS2 and LS3. One advantage it
has is that you could buy an optional pre-cut/pre-riveted shroud so you didnt have to mess doing it yourself.

Vararam - poor build quality, PITA install.

The other 3 are the same. Vortex is the lowest in cost. Go with that one IMO.

I used it on one of the C5s I had in the past. I paid ~ $250 for it AND a pre-cut radiator shroud for quick install and saving the stock one. Took literally 15-20 minutes to install.

Got the vararam in my car and love it!
Not one problem with the build quailty, got the newer VR2 one. The install was a bit of a pain but was worth it. One for the vararam!

hopefully this will clear it all up. It helps to have another person when doing this. I have had no cracks or any fitment issues with mine. Installing took a while to do but in the end I think it is the best system out there.
