Default Need new tires for Vette.

I am needing to replace my tires on my car and was wanting everyones input. I was wandering if the new Yokahomas were any good? I am currently running the BFG drag radials and the stock goodyears on front. I need to get new tires since race season is over and I need an inspection sticker. My car has 450 rwhp so I want something with decent traction. It never snows here and rain is scarce, so all I am interested in is dry traction.
Thanks

What sizes are you wanting??? That does narrow your choices. I have a ZO6 and if I stay stricltly with the stock size, I don't have much choice. Anyway, I plan on going with the Kuhmos. They make a 275Y40-17 at around 150 per for the front. And a 295Y35-18 for the back at about 200 per. These have got very good reviews overall and are about half the price of stock replacement rubber.

I am on Michelin Pilot Sports. I like the Yokohama AVS Sports better and will be switch back if I do not go to BFG KDs.

On my dads C4 we quit buying the Goodyears and started getting BFG KDWS's. Lemme tell ya, HUGE difference in ride sound and handling (anyone who's owned/driven a C4 can attest to the ride noise part). And for only like 160-175/tire we're gonna stick w' 'em.

I know quite a few people that run 'em on Mustangs and Camaro's, and a few other vette fans, and they all say its a very qood quality tire for the $$$.

What about putting a 285 or 295 tire on a 9.5" rim? I measured the wheels and they are 1/2" wider than my old SS wheels with 275s on them.
How do the BFG KDws hook up on the street? I want something quiet and smooth. I was getting tired of the stock tires.

well, ours hooks pretty well...but its a 100% stock L98...so the power isnt "quite" up there w/ an LS1 lol. But they hook up pretty well.

I Run The Kuhmo's On Zo6 Wheels. 275/17 And 295/18. Very Good Tire, Good Traction, Not Too Loud On The Highway And Don't Wear Very Fast, Even Bumping Them Up In Second In The Burn Out Box. You Can't Beat The Price And They Look Nice. Also these sizes don't rub on the 9.5/10.5 wheels if your car is lowered. Mine is lowered 4" all around. just thought I'd throw that in if you were ever concerned of tire rub on a lowered c5. Good Luck!

Ling, I dunno about the stock C5 sizes or the stock C4 sizes, but stock ZO6 sized KDWs or bigger are expensive......300+ per tire and I hear they wear like crazy(10k miles max). That's the only reason I am gonna go Kuhmos....Price and longevity. They are also reported to perform quite well.

I run Kuhmo Escta MX's, 255-40-17 front, 295-35-18 rear, on stock Y2K wheels. excellent traction, work great at track, I've ran 1.933 60fts. 11.62@125mph.
2nd gear burnouts at track,10,000 miles on them this year and approx 15-20 passes on them, still have about half tread. They're resonable priced at Discount Tire

Another vote for Kumhos. In a recent test in 5.0 mag they were as good as any in the dry.I cut .2 off my 60 fts over the runflats.

I just got Firehawk sz50 RFT's for the front of mine, and I am not real pleased. They don't look all that great, they slant in from the rim to the tread. They do have thick tread grooves. Are the other tires here run flats, and if not what about no spare? I am looking for something that looks better in the rear with a wide tread with deep tread grooves to put on come spring.

Hey Dover, I think most of the mentioned above are not runflats. I'm from the ZO6 camp and never had them to begin with. I guess you just gotta take the chance.

Kumho now has a runflat version of the MXs. I carry a repair kit, compressor, cell phone and AAA card, plus my s-n-l has a wrecker for his engine business.

You guys are right. After seeing the responses and thinking back, I will most likely go with performance tires instead of run flats. I can only remember twice being in a car when there was a big tire problem that could not be fixed with just air and going to get a repair. Also, with the pressure sensors there will be early warning. Thanks.

I have run the Kuhmo Ecsta MXs on my camaro for a year. They are a pretty good bargain. If money is no object, I would get the supercar tires on my rear tires thou. I have seen people cut 1.7s on them with a Z06.
