Default Name that noise! (video)

The warranty on my car expires in about 1.5 months. I want to get everything buttoned up by that time. the biggest annoying thing that the car does is that it has an obnoxious rear end noise when cutting the weel to the left when backing up or turning right when going forward. Sounds like an axle bouncing all over the place and you can feel it in the drivetrain with your hand on the shifter. The service rep at the dealer told me it was just the fact that when the car sits overnight all of the gear oil runs off the posi plates and i am just hearing noise from the clutches popping until they get coated. I couldn't really explain to him what the noise sounded like. I have been under the car with a wrench and found nothing loose. It is always from the right rear of the car and only when it is cold. After 10 miles or so you don't really hear it. No sounds at all when going straight. Since it does it EVERY morning, I took my digi cam and recorded me backing out of the garage like I do every day I drive it. The noise is quite well heard. The link below is to that video clip. Listen at exactly 11 secs into it and you can hear it no problem. The car is going into the shop Thursday (leaving it overnight Weds) so they can hear it first hand. Personally, I think the rear end is worn out or something like that just cause of the noise and the feel. What do you think?

Is your car an automatic? If so, my folks had the same problem when they bought their vette in 02. Long story short, the car was bought back under the lemon law. Happens to a lot of autos and there is still no fix for it yet. At least, that's what I was told a couple months ago. The noise only happened when they put it in reverse or when they turned the wheel all the way to one side.

Thanks for the reply. This is a 6-spd. Doesn't have to be all the way to one side, just like when i am backing out of my garage area and cutting it so i can pull out when I go back forward. Also seems like it does it lightly on right turns like turning right onto a side road.

Do not know, but it happend to me once in my 99FRC about 4 months ago. Lukely it has not repeated the noise since then. Have you had the fluids changed? If so maybe the correct liquids were not used.

I am 99 percent sure that you need to just add some equa torque to the rear diff. I usually have to add one tube a year in all of my rear wheel drive vehicles that have limited slip. My jeep used to make the same terrible noise, but much worse. I took it to a shop, and they just put some more lube in the rear end. Of course this is due to 117 degree days out here in Vegas summer, but it is quite common, and sounds just like yours does.

Well, look at it this way, if this does not help, then your out like maybe $4.00. The limited slip additives come in the gm synthetic lube, but sometimes it is not enough. The stuff is either baised, so it does evaporate out of the system.

If this does not help, how many miles do you have, and how do you use the car. I put the tube in my car and it took about 1 minute and my similar noise dissappeared.

Thanks for the replies. I drive it actually quite light. It only has 28k on the clock. You think a noise that obnoxious could be just a lube factor? It jerks the whole drivetrain! It really feels like a broken or wore out mount or bushing of some kind. I just want to make sure it gets addressed properly. Once it goes out of warranty fixing it is going to be REAL expensive if it is a prelude to something major.
