I'd get the upgraded output shaft as well. The labor on the diff replacement is rated around 10 hours.

No need to do it twice.

I helped with picking the ratio....fuel efficiency played a larger part in the decision.

I think an upgraded shaft would be a bit redundant. The car will never see hard launches, DRs, or 1/4 mile runs.

I'm still getting 26mpg on the interstate in 6th gear with my new cam and 4.10 gear.

A 4.10 made my RPM @ 70ish go from 1400 to 2000. No big deal

The upgraded shafts aren't required unless you'll be running a DR with a high stall and/or a shift kit. Come to think of it, I've never heard of a A4 breaking one yet, but it's cheap insurance for a A4 that sees heavy abuse.
