Default How to remove broken driver half shaft

I need to know how to remove a broken driver side half shaft.

I have everything taken off, knuckle, brakes, etc at the wheel but don't know how to get the shaft out of the diff.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave

The differential has to come out, there is a clip inside holding it in.
If you you speaking of the output shaft, I am assuming that is what you broke??

I'm assuming output shaft as well. The driver side shaft has a removable side gear that is held on by a snap ring. You need to disassemble that side of the diff to remove the shaft. Not that hard once the differential is out of the car. Good luck

Is there a C5 how-to wrenching guide on the net somewhere?

Thanks for the help. Dave

Take out the differential then.....

PS, if your cutting 1.57's on a stock shaft I'm shocked it lasted this long....

I was looking for that link earlier and didn't have it saved.

I agree with Z06-Dave, 1.57's on a stock shaft

I bought the shafts and diff(4.10's) slightly used from a friend and had them installed by another friend. They are supposed to be hardened Eastcoast supercharging shafts.

I have around 100 hard launches on them and I dump on the limiter ever pass. The shaft broke at Norwalk last Fri.

I had just put 28/10 Hoosier CO7 compound slicks on my CCW drag pack wheels.Did a nice burnout, staged the car and let her rip.It snapped when I dumped the clutch .Norwalk's sticky track claimed another victim.

Has anyone broken a hardened shaft with a nearly stock car?I have LGM headers,4.10's and zip tie mod.

I have a F-2 kit but only used it with factory rubber on the street, maybe 10-12 times.

Ok, that makes more sense. There are a ton of posts about differential output shafts on corvette forum. I haven't heard of anyone breaking a hardened shaft though. Are you sure it was the driver shaft that broke and not the passenger side? 99% of the time on aftermarket differentials the stock right side (passenger side) shaft is re-used. Only recently has DTE developed a hardened right side shaft. I have broken both the stock driver and passenger side shafts, but this was a h/c setup on 26/11.5 ET Streets. Please verify it was a hardened driver side long shaft that broke. Very interested to hear your results.

Slo,here's what I did to see if the driver side shaft was broken.Jacked the rear of the car up,put the tranny in first gear and tried to spin both wheels by hand.

Driver side wheel spins freely, passenger side doesn't move.I was told this is the way to check for a broken shaft.

I think I'm going to retire this car from drag racing.I'm going to try the road course/autcross stuff. It cost's to much to drag this car the way I drive it.

It should be a fun street car with the new 427 and wet kit.

Dave, your diagnosis sounds correct. If the driver side spun freely in gear that is the broken shaft. Go with DTE's hardened long and short shafts plus the differential strut. Their products seem to be the best. Sounds like you drive pretty well, just beef up the drive line weak links. Your 427 plus juice sounds like a good time... or more broken parts depending on how you look at it Best of luck with her.

my friend broke a HD shaft from ECS as well I would suggest getting a DTE shaft for the next one.

When did your friend buy his shaft.I talked to Chris at Eastcoast yesterday and he told me that he did have a bad batch sent out in late 03.

He's sending me a new one free of charge on Mon.BTW who is DTE.
