Default Why don't C5 owners use the PF58?

I've been checking out the Corvette Forum lately and have noticed that none of the C5 owners use the longer oil filters, they only use the PF44s. Why is that? I know with the f-body, the PF58 sits basically flush with the oil pan, so I figured that with the larger oil pan on the C5, they might have even more room. Or is the oil pan shaped so differently on the C5 that the longer filter hangs down way too far?

Exactly...

My first change, that's what I used, the 58....then 3 days later (500 miles later) I changed again...that thing was scraped to ****...it's easily the lowest point on the bottom of the car (even lower than the long tubes) by 1" or so...looks like it's the 44 for me! <img src="images/icons/smile.gif" border="0">

AC/Delco was making a great HD filter for our cars, the UPF44. They decided to stop making them though recently?!? I guess sales were down because it is 99% efficient unit which is the highest known rating for oil filter filtration. You can still find them...supply should be around in the stores for a little bit at least.

Another option is a WIX filter. They are a very well built filter that's rated at 96% efficient...

Now that the UPF series is discontinued, your best bet is to use the Mobil 1 or K&N oil filters. The part numbers for the stock sized filter are M1-107 and HP1007 respectively.

I e-mailed AC/Delco & they said that they were still gonna make the UPF44 for the Vettes (??)

Yup, I also saw a post on Corvette Forum the other day saying they'd still continue to make the UPF44, although it seems silly that they would keep making that one but not all the others. AC Delco should just start marketing this filter in more places, not just Pepboys. No wonder it didn't sell. If they put it in every GM dealer and all the places where the Duraguard filters are sold, they'd sell a lot more of them than they did.

The observation on my SS is that the PF58 hangs lower than the oil pan. One off-road excursion while on the road course and you are asking for huge aggravation and trouble if that thing gets punctured or broken. In my mind, the potential for disaster greatly outweighs any slight advantage the larger filter might afford.
