99 hardtop coupe trouble shifting into second
I have a buddy who owns a 99 coupe with a m6 He has been having trouble with his shifting into second. He tells me it just wont go almost like the shifter is hanging up on something. It happens while shiting normal and while shifting aggressively no grinding like a trans problem just wont go . Can anyone help has this happenned to anyone else?
Sounds like a bent shifter fork too me. I'm actually pretty positive thats what it is. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />
Has he had the car in for any kind of service?
Dealer fixed a rear end/tranny seal leak on my 99 but fucked up my shifting.
After taking to car to another dealer who couldn't figure it out, I pulled the center consoler, shift boot etc out myself and found they a) didn't reinstall the ******* shift linkage correctly adjusted or b) didn't tighten the blasted retaining torqx to spec and the linkage slipped.
I could tell the thing wasn't set up how it was because of where there is a samll buildup of grease (circle) around the shifterlinkage shaft that acts as a marker of where things used to be. I adjusted it and now it's 100 times better - can get all gears, but from time, esp. at low speeds, it's still a little stiff. Maybe a little bit more adjustment needed or maybe my driving with the shift linkage mis-adjusted caused some damage to the sycnhros??
Anyone knowledgeable about T56 care to chime in?

What is the shifter fork? Is it part of the shift lever and linkage mechansim or part of (integral to) the T56 itself?

last time I checked a shifter fork was the lever that moves the gear cluster, say from first to second gear. if it's bent, you most likely are looking at a teardown on your gearbox. if that's the case, you are more than likely gonna find other problems once inside, ie, worn synchronizers, chipped gears, bearings, etc.
hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I been there, done that, and got the T-shirt to prove it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

I had the same problem with my 97 vette... it would only be hard to get it into second...like it was hanging up on something. Long story short... my dealer had to order the tools to remove the tranny, about a week and $3800 later it was fixed... The problem was the synchros. Sorry to hear that and hopefully it has some kind of warranty on it.
