Default Question about Exhaust for a C5?

Got a friend w/ a C5, and he's not really into big time modding the car or racing or making it really fast or what not (I don't agree w/ that, but to each his own). He just wants it to sound really badass. So what would be the best catback setup for a C5 'vette? Maybe I can even talk him into doin an o/r x or h pipe w/ it to get a couple extra ponies in it, so what would be the best sounding and flowing setup from the stock manifolds back? I'm not really sure about the 'vettes, so I figured i'd see if anyone here might be able to help out, thanks guys!

PS - I was thinkin of something along the lines of the Corsa o/r x-pipe, w/ the borla stinger catback w/ dual 4 in tailpipes (seems like it would sound pretty nice, since it's got no mufflers and looks pretty nice ) I was lookin on Thunder Racing, and that setup seems like it would sound totally badass, but since I don't know much about the vettes and have never heard any of the exhaust's, i'm not positive!!

He doesn't race or anything, he just wants to turn heads when he goes by. Just curious, I know that'll be loud, but will it sound good? Cuz there's a diff between loud and good sounding loud! Like my o/r y, and cutout was loud, but not good sounding loud, but my 3" true duals is loud and good sounding loud!!

Well, good is subjective. He'll need to just go hear exhausts that are modded. I personally hate the sound of ls1's through offroad pipes and no mufflers (stingers are barely mufflers, as are loudmouths and open borla), but others love it.

Personally, i cannot stand Poorla, or "Loud Mouth" systems. Both sound like *** to me.

Mufflex has systems that use mandrel bent pipes for just about everything. Using Flowmaster or SpinTech mufflers. But just about everyone now makes some kinda LS1 exhaust system. B&B, Corsa, Poorla, Flowmaster, Dynomax, Magnaflow all have something out there. To me, Flowmaster or Corsa is what i'd personally choose, but B&B is good, as is dynomax and magnaflow.

Sound is subjective, and his tastes are different then everyone elses...Corsa and B&B seem to be pretty popular tho. Both offer that "quiet" idle w/ the mean as hell WOT. Corsa has some soundbites on their site, and LS1info.com has some sound files as well (mostly Fbodys, but you still get to hear what it sounds like)

Hope this helps

All the major exhaust names above sound OK. The problem is they are very expensive for what you get (around $800 for a cats back system). There is an exhaust mod that a guy sells (A&A Corvette Specialties) that sounds OK. You cut/weld in a smaller diameter bypass pipe. For some pics... see here. It's all a matter of preference. I bought some used titanium Z06 takeoffs mufflers and they sound like what I wanted.

The SLP Loudmouths will probably do what he wants. They are throaty with an aggressive pitch at idle. And when you hammer it, they just scream!

Tell him the loudmouth. I liked it on my C5, I just wish I would have got a corsa x pipe on it to get rid of the "boat sound" at low rpm's and to make a smoother sound on the higher rpm's. It did sound good though, and it received a lot of attention due to it being the only loud corvette around. I had a six speed so you could control the exhaust note a little more, but I don't think I would have liked the exhaust in an auto. It also sucked for longer trips (more than 2 hrs), but I think if I would have put some insulation on the slanted wall behind the seats.....it would have been less annoying. I don't know what it sounds like with the "restrictors" in the system, but from looking at them after I received the catback...they looked like a joke to me. It sounds VERY bad *** outside of the car, if you like loud cars. It is not the most refined sound in the world, but I would sure do it again!!!! It had a deep muscle car sound to it, and the loudmouth sounded A LOT better on my corvette vs. my ls1 Z28!!!!

Corsa Indy's, A fellow at work has'em and he likes them. I've got flowmasters but to me the sound is not very important. I can smoke his vette. Thats whats important to me.

Edit: His is much louder than mine. Or so we've been told.

It sounds really weird and high pitched like an exotic! Don't know what kind of sound he's lookin for, but i'm pretty sure he wants the low deep loud rumble of a muscle car!

For the most part, your not going to get an LS1 to put out that same "earth shattering" rumble of muscle car. They tend to have a more "race" pitch in their tone. Which isnt bad, but doesnt quite give that growl most people are after. Corsa's systems are very quiet @ idle, and have a huge hit @ WOT. Most of the LS1 systems are going to be somewhat the same...unless you go w/ cutouts or something similar.

Try B&B or Flowmaster then...maybe that'll be what he's after, if not, get the loudmouth, altho Im not too into it, it may give him what he's looking for

The most popular on the C5s is B&B PRTs and Borla Stingers. I will generally have to agree with Ling about Borla, but I do not know If he has heard the Stingers.....they sound pretty damn good. I have never liked any Borla system until this one. They hit a home run with it. I personally like the PRTs. Slight rumble at idle, not very loud at cruise, but they roar at WOT...throaty and a little raspy to. Run headers into Off road pipes into PRT and you wanna talk about music.

I have Corsa Indy, with FLP headers, no cats and x-pipe. Its getting on my nerves. I can either add cats, or go with a very cheap z06 titanium exhaust (from a friend).

I'm going to try the Z06, if I dont like it I'll switch back.

The problem with loud exhausts is that they get old very quickly. The answer might be the installation of quicktime electric cutouts. Noise on demand and the ability to be stealthy when in proximity of law enforcement.....

I agree, headers, and z06 mufflers are unbeatable. Corsa INDY's or stingers with headers is just obnoxious and unwieldy.

Default Re: Question about Exhaust for a C5?

If he has enough money to spend , I would suggest the FLP headers and stock Z06 mufflers. With the cats on it sounds stock (for a Z06) and with the cats off , it is quiet at idle and at cruising speeds but has a great sound at WOT. I had the Borla stingers but they were too loud without cats. The best part is when you wind the motor up and then let off to shift , it makes this burbling/wooshing noise that sounds VERY cool. The two biggest reasons I would recommend this setup is 1) There is no interior resonance at any rpm or any throttle position and 2) I've had a LOT of people tell me it's one of the best sounding exhausts they've ever heard.
