Default Noob C5 rear end ? ?

Sorry for the newb question, I tried searching. Im looking into buying a C5 auto in a yr or so and am curious at what point does the rear grenade. Is it durable like an F-body rear that will take you into mid to low 11's safely? The mods I would do is a 3000 stall, bolt ons, radials and maybe a 150 shot or cam.

Durable and f-body rear end do not go together

A lot of folks seem to be fine just changing to a hardened output shaft and keeping up with rear end maintenance.

The weak point in the C5 rear are the output shafts. The corvette stock rear will take you much futher than an F-body 7.5. Before you do those power mods check out a DTE brace ($400) and left side output shaft($200).

Keliente, An auto F-bod rear will hold up to some decent power and qtr. times, an M6 is the one that is a joke.

I've seen stock rear-ends hold up on 11 sec C5's, the main thing here to watch for is "wheel hop"....if the rear starts bouncing then let off the gas. If you're going to be doing a fair amount of racing with your C5 then you may want to upgrade the left-side ouptshaft (right-side too if really want to be safe)....and add a DTE Diff brace.

Drivetrain breakage, from my experience, is more a function of driving style than ET/Power level. I'm speaking for all cars, bot just C5s. The stock rear end will go very fast (into the 11s) with reliability. However, it won't tolerate wheel hop or clutch dumps at any time. LS1tech member "Ranger" has posted some very eloquent tips on avoiding breakage and maximizing ET. That would be a good place to start searching for maximum reliability.

Beating the **** of your car will always get rid of three things quickly:

1) Performace
2) Reliability
3) Fun

Dropping 3k on a rear end right away is ok if you have more cents than sense . Drive your car hard, but always maintain control.
