Default Stock mufflers restrictive?

I'm sure this has been discussed but the search feature isn't working for me right now. Are the two factory mufflers a restriction? I measured the OD of each and right where the pipes come out of the muffler they are less than 2" in diameter. The ID must be less than 1 7/8". The car has 2 1/2 to the mufflers.

From what I've read over at CF, they are not bad. I decided to keep my stock mufflers with my ARH 1 7/8" headers and catted x-pipe. For me, it was a matter of not wanting my car too loud, if it costs me a few HP its worth it IMO.

I don't want noise either but seems like a little larger wouldn't have been too noisy. This car is very quiet. My 06 Mustang has a 2" ID out of the mufflers. It's a little louder than my Corvette but certaintly acceptable.

Larry I'm shooting for the fastest N/A C6 with a factory catback until the prices come down. I don't how they justify the $ they're charging for 10 hp.

I'm going to run stock muffs. with no cats/xpipe/cam with electric cutouts. It should sound stock but with alittle more... quieter than borla right?

Do you have any before and after track results?

SilveradoSS500, Electric cutouts would be the ticket for track use. Sure can't crawl under the car to open them at the track without jacking.

ZO6 mufflers aren't very restrictive at all but the others are. There are aftermarket exhuasts that flow a lot better than nonzo6 mufflers and arent loud.

FWIW, for grins I took off my modded stock Ti exhaust and actually lost HP under the curve.... peak was the same though.

Does anyone know if the Zo6 Ti catback would fit a C6? I've got a friend with the stock exhaust off of his Z. mmmmmmmmm

That might be the ticket. Fairly quiet and possibly no hp loss on a stock heads/cam C6.

Default Stock muffler

I RUINED my 99 Z28 Camaro by removing the stock quite exhaust and putting a noisey muffler and twin outlets.

My car went from a quite extreemly fast pleasant to drive to a not any faster noisey rummbly piece of crap!

After a few months I regretted doing the change.

And it makes no difference what make muffler you use noisey does not always equal faster IMO.

My C5 Vette will be keeping it's stock quite mufflers!

Bank to subject! These stock Z06 mufflers can handle a good set of headers and a cam just fine! Right? Difference between a borla, corsa etc. might be 10whp.. Right....

Unless you go with a straight thru system like the Corsa TI off road exhasut, you will not make any significant hp than a Z06 TI exhaust. If you were to gain 2-3 hp max you would lose it in the weight difference. When GM did testing on the first Z06's they found the TI exhaust made about 2-3 hp gain over the stock exhaust. But remember that was a head and cam change essentially from a stock system.

I ran my stock mufflers on my 01 Vette when I had around 420 rwhp 400 rwtq. It was perfect. I upgraded the heads and put in a nasty cam was at 450 rwhp and by unbolting the catback completly and redynoing again only gained 9 rwhp.

Good to know, that's what I've been hearing as well. Thanx for the info.

Unbelieveable that these little 1 7/8 ID mufflers as quiet as they are can make 450 hp. But the proof is in the testing. Looks like I'm keeping my stock mufflers.
