ignition problem on a c5 ?
hey all, i am looking for some insight. My friend is having issues with her vette and i would like to help her as best as i can by avoiding paying any rediculous diagnostics fees at the stealership. the issue is a "service column lock" message on the display and she is only able to get the car up to about two mph before it dies. what could possibly cause such a thing. The car was running just fine the day prior. Thanks in advance for the help
To my knowledge there are 2 options.
1. Go to the stealership, this problem was covered under a Service Bulletin but I think GM has quit covering the repair for free. It took 3 times before mine was fixed.
2. Do an on line search for a Steering Column Lock Bypass. It is suppose to be an easy install. Corevette Forum would be a good place to look. This will definitely fix the problem

There is a fuel cutoff parameter in the PCM that kills the car above 2mph of there is a problem with the column lock. This is to prevent any safety problems, like a lockup or some BS.
There is a TSB for it, and the dealer may do the recall for free.. OR you can buy a column lock bypass module for $40 and that MAY fix it. Some of the earlier cars, (Some 97-98's) dont like the bypass modules. Also, if the column is truly stuck locked, you must get it unlocked to install the bypass. (Holding the steering wheel hard to the right when it's locked and turning on the ignition will sometimes get it to unstick)
The dealer will know ALL about this one, as it's one of the MOST common things with these cars. I had problems with my 99 years ago and put in the bypass module and it's never once had a problem since (over 3 years)
