Default First time on track

Took my car out to the local strip for my first test and tune last night.

I made 4 passes with my 1st being a 14.079 (No burnout) and my last pass was a 13.416.

This is the first time I’ve ever been on a drag strip so I’m just looking for any general advice that will help my times.

I bought the car last year and these are the basic specs I was given:

2000 Camaro SS M6
Comp Cam 222/224 562/568 112LSA with supporting mods
Ported and polished heads, 5 angle valve job
LS6 intake
SLP Lid (I have an LS1 motorsports lid as well)
Long tube headers
Off road y pipe
Hooker aero chamber cat back
Tuned

10 bolt with 3.73 motive gears (orange box) and load bolt cover. I’d like to keep the 10 bolt while I’m learning. I understand it’s the weak point on the car but a new rear end is not in my budget right now. I had a blast but I’m not going to be doing this every weekend or anything like that.

Tire:
Nitto NT555 315/35/ZR17
29 PSI (I assume lowering air pressure will help)
Around 5 years old but

I launched the car at around 1,800 to 2,000 RPM. I didn’t want to break the rear end and I was already hurting for traction.

R/T: .237
60: 2.289
330: 5.593
1/8: 8.865
MPH: 86.09
1000: 11.347
1/4: 13.416
MPH: 109.59

Thanks in advance for any advice. Just hoping to learn what the car is capable of, where I can make up time, etc

The MPH looks a little low for what the power should be from your list as i'd imagine this should be trapping somewhere between 115-120mph. Is this an auto or manual car? If auto, you'd definitely want a decent converter in there, but this will only help after you get some traction problems ironed out. I'd say at minimum you would want some aftermarket LCA's as these will help with wheelhop and get some more power to the ground.

As far as the tires, they probably aren't helping. I'll defer to someone more knowledgeable of bigger diameter tires for traction suggestions, but if this were my car, i'd have some 275/60 MT's on a 15" rim hoping for at least 1.5x 60 ft's. Just that along would drop you to the low 12/high 11 range.

Get the 60 down and it'll be a lot better some radials and slip the clutch some to try to lower the shock to the rear. It's all about practice with it, I like to get my draggy out and head to a abandoned spot and make hits to check my 60. This way I can adjust my shocks and air pressure and see what works the best.

What's the whp? I'm assuming since it's tuned you should be over 400whp with all the mods you've listed. My car probably makes 10whp less but trapped as high as 112, so you should be around 113mph.

60' is everything. Every tenth is .15 to.2 faster. Definitely 12 sec capable.

Thanks for the suggestions.

6 speed manual car

My buddy has a set of BFG drag radials on 15” rims that he said I can use. My only concern was hurting the rear end with a tire like this?

LCAs are on my list for this winter.

The list of mods is simply what he gave me on a sheet of paper. He was the second owner of the car and that’s what the original owner had done to it.. No receipts so I’m just taking he word for it.

I’ve never had it on a dyno and no sheets were provided. I’d like to get it on one this fall.

I would agree that the 60 foot time is my biggest hurdle right now.

Getting the clutch to hit right is every bit as important to launching a stick car as the right torque converter is to launching an automatic car. You probably have 11sec potential, a clutch hit controller can likely get you there with the rearend you already have. Might also be surprised how far you can get with those Nittos if the track is well prep'd.

Sorry, I don't know how I missed the M6 in your original post!

I've only had 1 6-speed car at the track. It was an 02 Camaro, besides LCA's, the only "power" mods were fast 90/90 setup, headers and 4" mufflex single exhaust out the back and just a lid. That car ran 12.8 @ 113mph with a 1.8 60ft running on some continental regular 16" tires on stock rims slipping the clutch out a little ways. Sounds like you are on the right path though. Good luck!!
