Default Bad Night at the Track

Tonight i went to the track hoping for better times after my hooker catback and cutout install. (i previously had a weld in flowmaster). I ran once with the cutout closed and once with it open. I know the 60 ft. times arent that good but I was really concerned with my trap speed.

My 1st run (cutout closed):
60 ft: 2.4452
1/8 ET: 9.3964
1/8 MPH: 79.32
1/4 ET: 14.2643
1/4 MPH: 101.69
I didnt launch as hard as i wanted to.

2nd run(cutout open):
60 ft: 2.3476
1/8 ET: 9.1729
1/8 MPH: 80.29
1/4 ET: 13.9857
1/4 MPH: 102.67
I launched harder but spun

I really dont know why my MPH is suffering. Im cleary down on power and dont know why.

Compare those times to my previous times with the flowmaster.
60 ft: 2.4109
1/8 ET: 9.2659
1/8 MPH: 81.42
1/4 ET: 14.1689
1/4 MPH: 97.21
Missed 4th

60 ft: 2.5643
1/8 ET: 9.455
1/8 MPH: 81.54
1/4 ET: 14.2096
1/4 MPH: 103.93
Had asr on

60 ft: 2.3287
1/8 ET: 9.1720
1/8 MPH: 81.23
1/4 ET: 13.9515
1/4 MPH: 103.23

My trap speeds are higher, both times at the track were about the same temp(65-70degrees). I have really crappy street tires and im afraid to launch real hard, being a college student, there is no room in the budget for a a new rear end. This was a really disapointing night.

I could alsouse some launching tips, preferably ones that are rear end safe .

Any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

A tune may be in order to help out your power levels. You'd be surprised what even a mildly modified car can gain with a tune (I know I was when mine was tuned).

The 60 foot times are bad, even for street tires IMHO. I'd think you could aim for 2.teens or better without endangering the rear end.

Good luck!

A tune would benefit me im sure but i was going to wait until the headers and y pipe go on in the summer and then get the tune. The thing is though, my time was worse with my hooker catback than my welded in flowmaster. It should be faster or atleast the same.

Yea i know my 60 foot times suck. If you think i could get 2.1xx 60 foot times while playing safe how should i launch my car? I tried slipping the clutch a little and slowy dumping it at ~1600-1800 rpms, the slow dump yielded the better 60 foot time and i had quite a bit of tire spin. Next time i might try launches around 2000-2200 rpms, this is where i start to worry about the clutch. I know it takes practice but practice means broken parts. I guess thats why they say "you have to pay to play".

Thanks for the response!

get some sticky tires.unless you get crazy and do wide open clutch dumps your not gonna bust anything.wait till you do the headers on the tune.try this also.come out of the hole like you would on the street, then roll into the throttle.might help a little

Okay ill give that a try. Im hoping to get some new wheels this summer as well so i will get better tires at the same time.

Anyone else know why my mph is so low???

Well being in Texas can't help out too much. Aren't some of your tracks above sea level? I'd look up the density altitude for that day, and use some altitude correction. I'd check the spark plugs, to make sure that they are not bad, as the car will pull timing like a **** if they are bad. I'd guess that the mph should be around 104-105mph, with everything that you have and the fact that you are not going to a superior track like E-Town or Sears Point.

Im used to racing at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown so i dont really know anything about San Antonio Raceway. I know that Hosuton Raceway is about 10ft above sea level. The conditions werent much different from when i wen before. The plugs only have about 5-8k miles on them so they should be fine. I should probably check the timing though.

HRP almost always has a really low density altitude. I don't know the specifics of SA, but it is definitely higher elevation. All else being equal, you should trap higher at HRP. There may not be anything wrong with your car.
