Default Why switch to 4th on a t56?

i got a 2001 T/A ws6 6 spd 3.42 and was wondering if its not better to leave it in 3rd gear than to shift to 4th i used a calculator and got this out of it

- 6336 rpm @106
- 6456 rpm @108
- 6576 rpm @110
- 6695 rpm @112
- 6815 rpm @114
- 6934 rpm @116

all the calculations were done with a 25" tire, 3.42 gear and a t56

so unless you got a car that goes faster than 116 in the 1/4 wouldn't you be better of making the engine handle more rpm than to put gears and
shift to 4th

i ran 13.3@106 last year with switching to 4th if i stayed in 3rd it might of been better

what do you think
thanks matt

If the power falls off way before that rpm it will slow you down. You want to find a gear and tire combo that will allow you to keep the rpms where the most power is made.

106 is the longest I would leave it in 3rd going by what you listed as long as we are talking stock heads and cam.

i've just checked TR cams and most should rev to 6800 so i guess leaving it in 3rd would only get you to 114mph before you start loosing power, but for a cam only car it still might be better but than cam car should run faster than 114

The only way it MAY be beneficial is if you made your car be able to handle the higher RPMS with the STOCK cam. So upgraded springs, and pushrods etc, but stock cam. Once you put a aftermarket cam in if you weren't trapping 116+ then something is wrong regardless. The point is it really wouldn't help, and would be much to hard on your car for the small benefit it may be worth..

You need to find where you car is making power, gear ratio, and tire height for your combination to optimize what gear you should be in. The only time I ever needed to stay in 3rd gear in any combo was my old 5.0, when it was basically stock (exhaust, pulley's, roller rockers, K&N) was trapping 104 MPH, and I had a 3.08 gear set on a 25" tire, I stayed in 3rd gear. I can't remember RPM's though (17 years ago ) but I think it was @ 6000 RPM.
Shifting into 4th hurt the ET, on THAT combo.

It's not recommended to spin that high, it's better to go to 4th.

I spin my stock bottom end to 7400. So yes with a cam and spring your idea would work, but you would be even faster having the right gear and tire combo, and shifting into 4th.

i totally agree i just don't want to put a gear in a 10 bolt its weak enough as it is and there's no funds for a better rear
thanks
