This might be more of a "general discussion" type thread, but I figure I'd ask here because I feel the responses might be more informed.
I have a 'burning' desire to test out my line lock & I have some worn ET streets..
I don't plan on burning them till the tires pop or anything crazy like that.\
I just want to get some cool pictures. The whole 10 years I've had the car, I've never done anything like that.

1)Would you subject your car to it?
2)What are the risks to the drive train ?

 

check the wind because the direction and speed can really change how the smoke "looks".

My line of thought is,of course, do this away from where law enforcement would get involved(duh).
So I find the big parking lot away from fixed objects & people....
Make a 'burnout' box with a gallon or two of water, get the car up to about 3K in second gear, engage the line lock.
Once the tires are spinning, I'll increase the RPM up to about 4500 & hold it for about 30 seconds & then release the line lock & let it roll out as I come off of the throttle.

I'm wondering if I should abort early if the engine starts to bog (tires grabbing) in order to not fry the clutch...
My other concern is the stress on the rear end...either with the posi clutches or the carrier bearings getting hot.

At the track, my burnouts are 5 seconds max.

 

Dude are you freaking serious? Just give it hell and have someone take a picture! You race the car, a burnout isn't any harder on the car.

I really can't believe there is a thread in the Drag Racing Tech section with someone asking how to do a burnout to take a picture and whether to "abort" and when...

uhhh, i usually engage the line lock....before i do my burnout.

 

you need to test the new line lock i did mine right after i finished filled the whole neighborhood wit smoke

 

The only comment I'd add to using the solenoid is not for extended periods of time (no more than 60 seconds...which when you think about it is quite long). Generally speaking, as LL solenoids are active, the heat produced from the coil if too hot can damage it. Personally I wouldn't run one for longer than 30 seconds (don't forget to allow time for cooldown).

 

I ran one in a burnout contest on a set of ET streets. I ran it for less than 90 seconds in 3rd gear (Th400) and blew out both tires. I suggest taping off the rear bumper first

Anybody upshift the car during the burnout?
I saw a guy pull off a 2-3 upshift mid burnout in an LT1 six speed..That's when the smoke really started roiling from the tires.

 

you would be better off trying to start off in 3rd if that is what you want provided you have the the gears and hp to start you off in the first place. I wouldnt try the upshift though, sounds like a good way to break something and you would also have to have your LL wired in a toggle, not sure how you got yours but mine is just a button. I made a little panel to replace my ashtray.

besides that the most stress will be on your clutch pending what gear your in


I started in 1st and rowed the gears to 4th gear at 120 mph.....I did this often, so I'd say it's pretty safe

 

Yes, if there is one thing I regret not doing is taping the rear quarters at the track. Especially in a white car.


I have seen people **** gears in a stationary burnout and everytime they shifted the rear tires would stop. Maybe not BAD, but cant be to good on **** either.

I would be upset if i broke something big if i was just trying to get a couple burnout pics. As long as I was racing though, I couldnt have been any harder on it. I would have made my second goal of spraying into the 11's last year but had to sped my nitrous money replacing the heads. Spent more money replacing broken **** then I did my mods, lol.
